So I got Ronin, along with the IHMN series after being gifted an amazon voucher.

Having read through the rules, they seem like a nice bit of fun – I quite like the scenarios, and with the points builder around we can, if we're so inclined, mess around with the factions that are explicitly stated to be weaker if we're so bothered.

That said, my question in particular has to do with the Koreans – I've been looking at the Perry Koreans, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how common or not the Heavy Infantry would have been. I know the Ronin list specifically says you can't use them with monks, and they're relatively limited, but has anyone messed around with breaking the limits given in the book and seen how it works? I'm primarily approaching this from a looks perspective, as I have absolutely no idea on the historical context.

On that note, given that the Perries do 6-packs (but hey, they're very nice, cheaper than some, and all different poses!) are there other makers one would recommend that sell in smaller packs? Preferably something I can get in the UK without paying import fees? I guess if not, the solution is just to get the Perry packs and make up a few different Buntai, as I'll be putting the games on for my friends anyway.

On a related note – anyone considered doing it in 15mm? That would be my first instinct, but I think part of the appeal to me is just how colourful the models can be, and that seems like it might get lost in 15mm.

You could make Buntai from the Perry and probably sell the rest.

OK – I want to do Ronin in 15mm, so I am interested in any answers about appropriate 15mm figures.

15mm shouldn't be that difficult, just half distances for things.

Don't really have much experience with Koreans though, I do have a friend who was supposed to be joining the small group of us playing it that was aiming for a Korean force and was going to lend a few out for other players, but his schedule got shifted for the summer.

However, from my looking over the rules, the Koreans and Chinese are the more difficult to get a handle on and seem like some of the right ones to "excise" from the rules to be broken up into a few more thematic buntai to cover different aspects.

I've got some experience with the Bushi and Sohei, though the Sohei one is less of monks and more of the women with naginatas for mine since it seemed to be the best fit for certain things.

I have successfully used the Koreans V Bushi. The combination of lots of cheap spear/blade/bow with Heavy infantry (particularly the 2 sword armed variant) is effective) . RE lists, we usually work on the basis that a warlord taking 15 or so men on a raid/journey is not going to be too particular about troop ratios. He will take what is to hand, so no dropping out his bodyguard in favour of some passing peasants. All troop types are costed so no problem with paying the cost and taking what you want at this very low scale. Regards Alan

If you go 15mm, you should cover your needs with just a handful of packs. Would be a very cheap way to try it out.

And if you want to include the fantastical in 15mm, everything in the Ronin pdfs can be found here (save for Jorogumo) :

Although, I have been prepping on that. Still need to do some test sculpts to see if my idea is sound.

in 28mm most packs are around 4-6. Perry is pretty good value all in all. Dont know anyone else who does 28mm koreans but I am sure there is someone.

Yeah, I've been looking around and I think if I go 28mm Perry will be the way to go. Nice models, no import fees, and just about the cheapest I've come across too, at 1 and 1/6th of a pound per figure. Nice that their yari come with the Ashigaru where relevant, too.

Those 15mm.co.uk ones look cool too.
