Hrm
Well, first of all, I think you'd get a greater variety of responses on the official forums ( infinitythegame.com/forum ). They're being a bit buggy right now, running on performance mode, but there's usually a hundred folks online at any given time. Or you could go to data-sphere.net for the unofficial forum, which is primarily dedicated to terrain and minis from companies that haven't signed the 'Designed for Infinity' licensing deal with Corvus Belli.
Now, aside from plugging my other two gaming forums, let me see what I can do for you. I post as 'Section9' on the Infinity forums.
OK, general rules for building a force in Infinity: You want at least 8 regular orders in each combat group, and you want to spend most of your Support Weapons points (you get one point for every 50 points of agreed army total. If you are playing a 200 point game, you have 4 Support Weapons points to spend, regardless of how many points your list actually ends up being).
There are also two different build styles for any Infinity army. One is for the Kill-em-all mission, the other has a lot of 'specialists' to accomplish mission objectives. The missions can be pulled from the Paradiso campaign book, the 2014 Infinity Tournament downloads, or a couple different fan mission sets. If you're going to build for missions, you really need to determine your mission FIRST, then write the army list. However, for the ITS (Infinity Tournament System), you can usually have two lists and trade between them depending on mission. The missions can be split into a "mobility/kill the other guy" set and a "do something sneaky" set.
There's an awesome online tool for building your army at: link
I tend to build better 'mission' lists than 'kill-em-all' lists, so that's what I've written here.
Now, while I would love to make Izzat Beg my Lieutenant, I cannot unless my entire army is Irregular. And that's not really competitive. But the Kum motorcyclists box has one rider with a Chain Rifle, and one with a rifle who can stand in for Izzat Beg until he gets resculpted to match the new bikes.
Naffatum are on the international Haqq "don't leave home without them" list. I took two with the Heavy flamethrower, because that's the best 12 points you will ever spend. There's a blister of 2 of them.
I happen to really like the Hassassin Muyibs. They're a bit pricey, but they're excellent troops. So I take the Muyib LT (who has the rifle and light grenade launcher with both normal frag and smoke rounds) and the Muyib spitfire for firepower. They're both in the Muyibs box.
The Hassassin Barid is only one point more than a Ghulam hacker, and has a weapon called a 'marker' which launches a hacking device repeater across the table. This gives the Barid a longer reach. Single model in the blister.
The Najjarun Engineer and Ghulam Doctor are both in the Haqqislam Support pack, as is the Nasmat helperbot. A helperbot can help either one, but you have to decide which one of the two the Nasmat is assigned to at the start of the game.
The Yuan Yuan is another Irregular trooper, so I'm kinda breaking the usual guideline, but I like having a drop trooper to raise hell in the backfield. May not be needed when you have a pair of Kum racing forward, but it's fun. Yuan-yuan are mercenaries, so some people may object to their use. They're *only* illegal in tournaments, but some local groups always play with the ITS restrictions. Comes in a blister of 2 models, a guy with a rifle and a girl with a bigass sword.
And finally the Kameel EVO repeater is there to make your hacker better, as well as make that Yuan-yuan more likely to land where you want him to. It comes in a box of 2 'baggagebots', which help make your force less likely to break and run (well, it changes where your breakpoint is).

The bad news is that pretty much nothing is included in the starter box. The good news is that all of those models I used in the list are solid, useful troops in their own right.
For a cheaper force that should work pretty well, I'd try the vanilla Haqqislam starter box, the box of Kum, and the Qapu Khalqi starter pack, running a list like this:
