Did these Divisions have a specific purpose, or were they just used as the strategic insinuation required?

from what I have read they were in theory to clear the path for the corps behind them and block any threats till the corps could deploy. that is why the combined arms of light cav artillery and light infantry..not a strong attack force but a spear tip to blunt attacks and seize favorable terrain…as I said it was in theory and completely dependent on the tactical sense and flexibility of the corps commander

We used them under the 'Napoleonic Command' rules and the are quiet effective.

Quite apart from the interesting variety of troops, these divisions often had the ablest and boldest leaders – s it's quite valid to give their leaders better than they usual Austrian half-dead that some rule systems like to give them…
