Even in 1898, nations needed reasons to go to war. Like the one the yellow journalists made up for us to fight the Spanish! So, if the Germans and Japanese wanted to crash our party, they would need an excuse. Oh, here's one! link Well, by the time of the SAW, Germany and the US were on their best behavior settling the Samoa crisis. However, don't let peace talks get in the way of a good war. Wargamers are worse than Real World nations when it comes for finding an excuse to play with their toys. |

The Germans certainly had the ships in the area to cause some major trouble. Spain tried to enlist a number of European countries to join in the war against the US, and there are some great scenarios to be made from the what-ifs. One thing though for balance, the Royal Navy canīt play! |

A ( superior) german squadron collected there shortly after Manila Bay. The British, French and Japanese also had cruisers in the bay to "observe". The Germans were very aggressive. The Austrians were considering sending ships to help the Germans and the Spanish, but an apparent leaning towards the Americans by the British essentially squelched any further efforts. I have 1/700 fleets for both a German followup attack and a Spanish/Austrian/German "fleet of relief" based in the idea that various nations contributed to the Peleyo/Carlos squadron. |

So, what if the other navies in Manila Bay decided that the US didn't deserve to own the colony. MacArthur would of had no place to "return" to, decades later

By mid June, 1898, the Germans East Asia Squadron in Manila consisted of Kaiser, Kaisrin Augusta, Irene, Prinzess Wilhelm, and Cormoran. |
