18th century with no real cavalry? Whatever for? Americans have been known, from time to time, to regard July 4, 1776 as the key date of the war. I have even observed that it some mark its anniversary with spcial events. TMP link Rick |

I will be painting some AWI today
.. hurricane Arthur will supposedly keep us in. And I have cavalry, they were there, just not in big numbers
.And I had a conversation with a friend who is very, very well read on the AWI and he had mentioned once that during the revolutionary war there was a shortage of horses because of some virus prior, has anybody else ever heard this? |

What could be better? Betsy Ross flags! Rugged Continentals in ragged regimentals vs. foppish toffs in powdered wigs! (Or would toffish fops be more decadent? I never can decide.) Francis Marion! Daniel Boone! Davey Crockett! (What, he wasn't there? Never mind.) Jebediah Springfield! Those were the days, when a gentleman could send his slave into the army to fight for Liberty. An Historical Po-em by Henry Gibson: CARMEN BELLICOSUM. A SONG OF WAR. Guy H. McMaster. In their ragged regimentals Stood the old Continentals, Yielding not, When the grenadiers were lunging, And like hail fell the plunging Cannon shot; When the files Of the isles From the smoky night encampment bore the banner of the rampant Unicorn, And grummer, grummer, grummer rolled the roll of the drummer, Through the morn! Then with eyes to the front all, And with guns horizontal Stood our sires; And the balls whistled deadly, And in streams flashing redly Blazed the fires; As the roar On the shore, Swept the strong battle breakers o'er the green sodded acres Of the plain; And louder, louder, louder cracked the black gun powder, Cracking amain! Now like smiths at their forges Worked the red Saint George's Cannoneers; And the " villainous saltpeter " Rung a fierce discordant meter Round their ears; As the swift Storm drift, With hot, sweeping anger, came the horseguards' clangor n our flanks. Then higher, higher, higher burned the old-fashioned fire Through the ranks! Then the old-fashioned colonel Galloped through the white, infernal Powder cloud; And his broad sword was swinging, And his brazen throat was ringing Trumpet loud. Then the blue Bullets flew And the trooper jackets redden at the touch of the leaden Rifle breath; And rounder, rounder, rounder roared the iron six- pounder Hurling death! |

FIW tonight for me. BTW 'Cracking amain' amain is a great word I think it fell out of popular use in the last 25 years. It fair took me back to read it here. |

No not today.I am a great fan of wargaming the American rebellion but not really interested in celebrating the start of it. Good luck to those who want to of course. |

My AWI minis haven't been out of their boxes in probably 10 years. Not a whole lot of interest in it here, I'm afraid. |
John the OFM | 06 Jul 2014 5:22 p.m. PST |
Played a generic AWI game last night using 800 Fighting Englishmen for rules. That is a Sword and the Flame variant. It looks promising, but will need a few tweaks on top of the ones I already did. |
