I wonder why the AWI has gotten so popular in recent years? There seems to be a surge in new figures, rules and books lately.

I'm guessing some clever souls noticed that the major miniature wargaming markets are the US and the UK, and that the AWI features these two sides shooting at each another, so is likely to be popular in both markets.

It happened long enough ago that most of the ill-will has faded into nostalgia. Mostly.

Stir in many memorable characters, managable-sized battles where dramatic stuff happened and history was made, colorful, varied uniforms and serried ranks delivering black-powder volleys, and you've got yourself a winner of a wargame.

when does it go on sale??

Redcoat 5505 Jul 2014 4:14 p.m. PST

Well I will be buying this one! I do wish the ad didn't refer to the Hessians as mercenaries though, the Hessian soldiers were not mercenaries, their rulers were the one's that rented their armies.

Is that a bandage under his hat?

John the OFM24 Jul 2014 10:57 a.m. PST

I have been playing AWI since 1977. Back then we called it AMR. grin
I still have my core British and Yank Hinchliffe figures, twice rebased due to scale creep.

As I see it, the rest of The Hobby™ is catching up to ME.

John the OFM24 Jul 2014 10:58 a.m. PST

Bandage under his hat? No, he is a reenactor. Saturdays he is a Continental officer, and Sundays he is a Pirate.
It's a red polka dot scarf.

The lapels look rather long, it looks as if he could button them down to his groin. Must be nervous about summat.

Supercilius Maximus25 Jul 2014 2:48 a.m. PST

Continental uniforms – or at least those made locally – were deliberately given generous lapels in order to function as what we would call an overcoat. Specifically, the lapels were intended to button over AND come down low enough to cover the abdomen "the fashion in Europe be what it may".

I got my copy. Haven't had an in depth look yet, but first impressions are it looks great.
