How often did NVA tanks make a showing against U.S. forces? Once in awhile? Never?

I've been playing some bolt action vietnam mod games and I'd like to toss a pt76 or some sort of soviet style armor on the board if it's not too bizare/unlikely a sight.

Very rare against U.S.

Only two occasions that I recall and only one nighttime tank to tank action.

Look up battle of Lang Vei – U.S. special forces camp near Khe Sanh with PT-76 unit overrunning the camp and Ben Het M48 vs. PT-76 and a few BTR-50 APC.

I recall there was an incident in which a few F-4s carrying Napalm spotted a platoon of T-54s in the open on the wrong side of the DMZ. So while not a direct incident, it's definitely goes into "it could have been" category.

Damon.

This book is the official account of US armor in Vietnam. Oat of the serious armor battles happened after US forces left. The Eastertide offensive of 1972! had a lot of,armor battles.

I remember seeing footage of a Sheridan taking out a PT76.

jdginaz03 Jul 2014 11:47 p.m. PST

Maybe but not in Vietnam.

Armour in Vietnam counts 4 encounters with armour from the North……there are also good accounts of clashes with ARVN and NVA after the US retreat……..worth a look.

NavyVet04 Jul 2014 9:00 a.m. PST

Gaz. You mean US withdrawal ??

Gaz004504 Jul 2014 11:02 a.m. PST

Withdrawal, retreat,abandonment…….take your pick!
'Strategic redeployment' is the modern phrase!

Solzhenitsyn04 Jul 2014 11:18 a.m. PST

Gaz, really?

I guess a retreat by a large part of the American population who would not support the war any longer.

Abandonment by American pols wanting to end involvement with the South's government.

Withdrawal by US and Allied military.

The military situation was well in hand when US troops were withdrawn from most combat operations in early 1970's.

Tgunner, that is a great link, thanks.

Gee, guys, I get the impression that NVA armor vs. Allied armor was commonplace.

Oh, that's thanks to Flames of War, so I could be wrong… :)

As already mentioned … very rarely … And some good links guys … Also, I agree with Solzhenitsyn's comments …

No White… It isn't. I have the Flames Vietnam book and it is very clear about this. The armor lists in Tour of Duty cover the correct units in the US Army, NVA, and ARVN. Even the art work depicts the correct scenarios in that you never see US vs. NVA armored units clashing since it only happened a time or two. As for armor use in Vietnam see my link above.

Although I will admit that I'm tempted to do some Fulda Gap scenarios.. 1967 style. But I guess I need Soviet grunts and M60s to do

@Solzhenitsyn: No problem. If you like that book then you'll love this one too. It's the classic "Seven Firefights" book.
