So you kill the hand. For what? Are you just Bleeped texting things up or did you plan to kill Ned and…wait, what?

Chaos is a ladder.

If Jon Arryn dies…

… the most competent man in government is removed. Good for LF.
… LF gains indirect control of the Vale, either as Lysa's eventual new husband or as her puppetmaster.
… the Lannister incest remains unexposed (Stannis would not be able to convince Robert without Jon Arryn's support).
… Cersei can continue plotting Robert's death. Even if the Starks remain uninvolved, the likely result is a civil war between the Lannisters and the remaining Baratheon brothers, perhaps supported by the Tyrells. Good for LF.

If Jon Arryn doesn't die…

… the Lannister incest is exposed, Cersei falls, Tywin most likely stands alone against the realm (if he makes a fuss, that is). Less Chaos, bad for LF. Also, Stannis becomes heir (i.e. gains more power), and he doesn't like sneaky schemers like Varys and LF.

He didn't plan to kill Ned. The plan was for Ned to go to the Wall. Cersei was on board with this plan, not being as totally stupid as she was in book 4. (Watch for Cersei Unleashed next season. Good stuff. )
Good King Joffrey botched that up. There are fan theories that LF put that idea on his head , just for fun and chaos.

Martin has said that there will be several sitters on the Iron Throne before the saga grinds to a fault. Since LF has told Sansa he wants " everything " I assume he wants to sit on the uncomfortable chair. He has no blood claim though. Unlike Robert who had a Targ grandmother or something.

I have a feeling he will reap the whirlwind.

They certainly seem to have introduced a lot more characters into "The Archers" these days. I haven't listened regularly since Nigel Pargiter fell off the roof.

All the best,

John.

Littlefinger EXPECTS chaos and plans for it. Others just react to it without knowing the cause.
Note how he started the war. First by persuading Lysa to poison Jon Aryn. Next by telling Catelyn that the dagger was Tyrion's.

It seems that you can accomplish a lot by counting on the gullibility of the Tully women. And their brother is no prize either.

If he can do this with just his little finger what happens when he uses his big finger?

KTravlos02 Jul 2014 11:02 a.m. PST

Yes, he wants the chaos because only in such chaos could he escape the social conditions that cost him his beloved. He also hates he great houses. He wants to be on the top, but in a world of his rules. He will I warrant get what he wants and then suffer a nasty death.

Winston Smith02 Jul 2014 12:52 p.m. PST

He certainly hates Starks. One nearly killed him in a duel for the hand of the fair Cat. And then the little brother married her. And Ned trusted him????

I can see him egging Joffrey on just for spite.
I find it amusing that his great skill as Master of Coin was just borrowing and cooking the books.
Seeing everything as part of his master plan is funny once you realize he is not all that competent.
Martin has warned that prophecy can bite you. So can relying on Evil Geniusses.

UltraOrk03 Jul 2014 9:28 p.m. PST

It doesn't matter, he'll be dead soon.

Mithmee07 Jul 2014 6:46 p.m. PST

Yeah, I doubt that he will survive since all he has done is make enemies.

Mithmee07 Jul 2014 6:47 p.m. PST

Oh and I believe that Sansa will be the one who kills him.
