Some buddies were getting this and I'm pretty interested, too. My question is on the smaller rulebook that comes with the starer that includes humans & Martians. From my read of its description it contains only rules and NO lists. Do I understand correctly that on top of the starter, I have to also buy the hardback rulebook in order to play? Thanks. |

Yes. sorta, The small book is the basic rules, you could play just with those, but it will be a small subset of the whole game. If you want to play with just the starter, you can, but there is so much more to the game. But it will give you a feel for it, use basically all the humans against all the tripods in the starter for a game. I really like the game, the rule book is full of great background, and soon we should be getting, a pdf for making variant tanks as the plastic sprues lend themselves to it. I made a Medic unit out of a Mark II tank, added extra doors, and gave it a HMG. No real rules for it yet but it will be used. Also have a Engineer Repair truck, they are in the Hardback book, but no models, using a Flames of War one, will double for one of my command units as well. The figs are closer to 18mm than 15mm just so you know, this was done so the HO Scale buildings would work well with the game. Bluemoon's WWI figs fit well with All Quiet figs. Hope that helps some. |

That helps. Thank you. Sounds sort of like recent GW starters then. Still need to buy additional to get the full game. Would have been a little peeved if I'd found that out after just buying the starter. |

Yeah, you definitely want the hardback rule book. It has so much cool material in it. |

Another shout in support of the hardback rule book. Very much enjoy all the stories and background material, that said you would not need it to play the starter set just play using all the peices as stated above. I would strongly suggest getting it if you expand your collection. |

Had hoped that fluff inclusion in the hardback was the only difference. Another $50 USD on top of the starter is kind of off putting to me personally (because I usu. have to provide both sides for anything that's not GW or Privateer Press). Will wait and see instead of jumping in full force. |

Yeah, that is disappointing- buying in at $100 USD is one thing, buying in at $150 USD is hard to swallow. My primary interest is the tripods- I may still get the starter box but I'm unlikely to buy more models if I need to drop $50 USD to use them. Rich |

I've done a quick comparison between the starter rulebook and the hardback rulebook. The starter has everything you need to play including point costs for the units (it should be noted that there are NO army lists in either rule book, you just buy what forces you want) and the only things missing from the starter rule book (aside from the fluff and the great color pictures) are the special rules for a few of the more exotic units that aren't even available yet. |

Good, doesn't sound too bad then. Rich |

That does make a difference. Thank you. If you don't make armies from lists or a force org or whatever, then I'm guessing it's scenario driven? |

My friend has the starter rules and I just got a copy of the hardback, so this only is my knowdage of the hard back. 1. There seems to be two (or three) formats to play a game. In the begining of each force are charts if you want to play "historical" games. I.E. What the US forces saw being used by the Marians at some point or another. If you have played or seen Flames of War army lists, it sort of looks like that. 2. Then in the main rules for each army you can freely pick models by point costs. Its very much "If you want to play a 500 point game, ok." For the Martians you use the highest pointed model as the command, then so and so fourth. There is no "you must take X tripod as your command element." 3. In the back of the book there are ten different scenarios. It really depends on what you and your fellow player chooses to do. Again all of this is based on the hardback and not the starter, as I never got to really look at. If I am wrong on all the above I am very sorry, as I sort of glanced though it. |

I purchased both the hard back (HB) and then the starter set. While I hate (hate) reading rule books, I have found the HB enjoyable, it is well written and interesting. They did a very good job of developing the "history" of the conflict. The rules state that both sides agree to a point total for the game. The only must have for a list is a Command Unit. Ive yet to play a game, but looks like everything you need to play is included in the starter set. For the Martians you get 3 Assault Tripods; with options that gives you a 750pt force For the US Forces you get 6 Steamer Tanks, 3 Machine-gun stands, 2 Infantry Squads (6 stands), and 3 Rough Rider Motorcycle stands. which comes in at around 530pts, could be more depending on options. I have already added 3 more steamer tanks. The only thing that I wish they had included were a set of player sheets that have at least the damage charts and play basics so you dont need to look them up. They may be available some place as a download, but have not found that yet |
