I was gardening yesterday, and heard something new in the air. I was very surprised to look up and see a B-17. At least now I know I wasn't hallucinating! (This post makes more sense if I mention that I live outside Hamilton.) |

So did I. I didn't get to a window in time to see it however. |

I love that sound. I can always pick out a four radial engine plane when the EAA flies theirs. I haven't heard it yet this summer. Probably soon though as the convention is coming up. |

Were they doing flights? When Sentimental Journey visited my town, it was $500 USD to fly in her. I got to fly for free as a reporter. It was an amazing experience (and loud!) |

Yes, they are doing flights for the next couple of days. I think the cost is around $800 USD CDN for cockpit seats. |

the local Hamilton TV station(CHCH) said it was $500 USD on the evening news. |

Here's the pricing from the official website, as linked in the OP: "The aircraft holds 8 passengers (2 in the nose at $850 USD US each and 6 for the radio room/waist gunner position at $425 USD US each)." My wife asked me today if I was interested, but I really can't justify spending that amount on that particular experience. |

Having ridden in the nose in the bombardier seat, I can tell you that it seems that YOU are flying as the entire plane is behind you! It also brings home just how exposed these men must have felt looking forward at Luftwaffe attackers doing the nose to tail sweep with cannon firing. The take off and landing are thrilling from that position. You don't see much from the waist/radio position. I flew free as well as we were doing a documentary on the 8th Airforce's annual reunion and the 50th anniversary of the B-17, at Boeing Field in Seattle. Also present was the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Kay Starr, and Tex Beneke! All the 8th guys were in uniform for the evening dance, and an amazing number of them had English wives. The program was called "Sentimental Journey". Someone might still have it available from King-Tv in Seattle. Great interviews. |
