Helmand Province After 10 Days Of Fighting. "Fighters establish foothold in southern Helmand province in 10-day deadly battle against Afghan forces. The Taliban has established a foothold in southern Afghanistan in a 10-day battle against Afghan forces, locals said, as the army and police struggle to prove they can defeat the fighters without NATO help. A coordinated assault by 800 Taliban fighters on police checkpoints and military posts began on June 19, with Afghan forces rushed in to recapture parts of Sangin district in Helmand province

Sad very sad
the lunatics[fanatical islamists of all types] continue their madness
Hopefully the Afghans won't prove to be the poor soldiers as the Iraqis have shown to be
but I have grave doubts
There has been alot of wasted blood and treasure from the NATO/The West/the USA on both countries/regions

Sadly, this was inevitable. The Taliban were never defeated and never went away; they just waited for NATO to leave. I have many British friends who spent time fighting around Sangin and it seems that everything that they did, along with the rest of the NATO effort in Afghanistan, is now at risk. From my own experience, I think that the Afghans are better soldiers than the Iraqis seem to be and they are certainly brave enough. My worry is that the government is weak, the commanders are very poor and their organisation is dreadful. Jurgen |

Yes indeed. I recall asking "haven't they learnt anything?" before we went in. And I think Jurgen's assessment is all too accurate. |

Well you are the best to judge Jurgen. Hopefully as you mentioned the ANA should fight better than the Iraqis
But in the end
the Taliban are not going anywhere
save some to Allah sent there by the ANA, etc.

It also doesn't help that half the country has 'family feuds' that look more like company-scale engagements, complete with crew-served weapons on both sides

After we've left afghanistan, Najibullah was holding against mojaheddin for aabout a year
and then Gorbachev cut off fuel and ammo supplies. No tanks/planes/helicopters led to victorious march of the opposition, mass desertion of the troops and bitter end for the government. I understand that there's a problem that coalition doesn't really trust current Afghan government
but I doubt there will be a lot of changes even with a new president
still if you want the state troops to hold it will require a massive supplies to them. |

Yes, NATO/US/etc. does not trust the gov't. Another 3rd World corrupt, self-serving, polarized, entity. I believe with all the problems in that region including tribal, ethnic, warlords, etc., etc. they will be cursed with a state of unrest and or war
for a long long time

Tango01 | 02 Jul 2014 11:41 a.m. PST |
Agree with you my friend, but that was not taking into account before the invation? Any 3rd corrupt World country would ended same as their history. What really had changed there is the incredible amount of their drug crop. Even the Taliban work now with them (in their "government" period they forbade it) Imho it wasn't the best experience for the US/NATO plans there. Amicalement Armand |

Much of that region, as well Iraq and the areas in the vicinity was a very big mess long before the US/the West/NATO, etc. got involved. I think the plan was get rid of AQ/UBL/Taliban in Afghanistan. And train up the local gov't and it troops to maintain the peace afterwards. But just like in Iraq and before that in Vietnam, the local gov'ts and their troops were not up tp the tasks, for various reasons
Even with all the training, support, equipment, $$$, etc., etc.
And again, as I heard a former CIA agent say on CNN recently, some places don't do democracy well. And as horrible as it sounds, do better under a dictatorship. You can even sight the former Yugoslavia as well

Didn't the same thing happen around Sangin last year in the summer link And then there was the rapprochement between local security forces and the Taliban last winter of course link |
Legion 4 | 05 Jul 2014 2:17 p.m. PST |
The Taliban just blew up 400 fuel trucks in Afghanistan. It is believed those trucks supported NATO
And where were the ANA, Police, etc., ? Hell
Where was NATO !? |
