from Perry Miniatures Facebook page
"We are aware that there are rumours flying around that we have left Games Workshop! Thought we should set the record straight and let you all know that…we have! After 36 years, man and boy, working on Warhammer, 40K and of course, for the last 15 years LotR and the Hobbit we are now able to focus our energy on our historical ranges. This means more time to dedicate to Perry Miniatures, and of course Mr Jackson who we continue to make 54mm WW1 figures for. We had an excellent evening on Friday at The Trip to Jerusalem with GW, and ex-GW, colleagues and friends who got us very, very drunk – cheers!
"
YMMV.

ArchitectsofWar30 Jun 2014 4:23 p.m. PST

Let Freedom ring!

Garand30 Jun 2014 5:36 p.m. PST

Didn't mention the most important part of this announcement: the Perrys are working on 3-ups for Agincourt plastic foot knights!

Damon.

Intrepide30 Jun 2014 6:09 p.m. PST

Autonomy. Good for them.

Not sure why folks are making this such a huge deal on this thread and another where the rumor first started here on TMP. Sounds like this was a mutual and amicable decision for both parties. However some folks are trumpeting this as the demise of GW and the second coming for miniature war games. Good for the Perry's that they will focus more on their brand and I am sure we will see lots of new figures from them. But really is this really big news?

But really is this really big news?

I think it is, because of what you've stated. First, a long term working relationship comes to a close in an amicable manner. This would be a moment for many to reflect on that body of work. Second, the focus on their own brand which, for fans, is a sign of more good things to come.

All things considered, I'd call that big news.

Two superlative artists are no longer bound by corporate strictures and the static WHF and WH40K templates. Their time is entirely freed up for their own initiatives and creativity. Yes, it is big news. I'm surprised anyone could miss it.

"Two superlative artists are no longer bound by corporate strictures and the static WHF and WH40K templates. "

And how, exactly, were they 'bound'? As far as I can see, the Perry's have been free to pursue their own goals, and their own products, quite free of interference from GW. I don't think the GW layers got to veto anything coming out of the Perry Miniatures stables.

I think it has always been evident when they worked for Wargames Foundry that they made what they damn well pleased. I give you the Biblical range as proof. grin

Maybe with GW, not so much.

With their own company, back on track.
I have always said they are the perfect wargamers, since if no one else makes it, they will do it themselves. Carlists???

We will now see a lot more self indulgent ranges that suddenly everybody needs, but they never heard of before.
I am just thankful that their self indulgent ranges include the AWI. grin And I am totally confident we will see a Washington Crossing the Delaware vignette soon.
Well, "soon" may be measured in geological time…

This seems a good time for a poll:
With their new found freedom/time, what should the Perrys make first?

Winston Smith30 Jun 2014 9:20 p.m. PST

Whatever they feel like making. That's the way it's always been.
They will tell you what you want. grin

legatushedlius30 Jun 2014 11:35 p.m. PST

My only concern is for The Hobbit figures…

RayHaskins01 Jul 2014 2:10 a.m. PST

Best of luck for the future.

boudin noir01 Jul 2014 2:13 a.m. PST

…so the unexpected journey is unexpectedly cut short?

streetline01 Jul 2014 2:32 a.m. PST

The Hobbit was initially 2 films and its jump to 3 films seems to have caught GW (and Lego) slightly on the hop, given their slightly sporadic and strange output of things that were expected to be in the films but aren't (Thrain the broken?) and the late arrivals of the big Orc lad whose name escapes me, Beorn in bear form, etc. I think the lead time on the Hobbit models means by now everything for the last film is pretty much done and is now waiting for the final film.

I share your fears about further non-film LOTR releases but they have always been a bit ropey.

kallman01 Jul 2014 5:35 a.m. PST

OK fair points all around. I too have always felt the Perry's had a pretty open hand on what they did for GW with perhaps the exception of the LOTR franchise. Given how prolific the brothers are I expect we will see a surge of releases in the not too distant future. Or gosh maybe they will take a bit of a vacation. I would think at this juncture the LOTR figures that are tied into the movies are done and just waiting full production. However, given how much GW is charging for the current release I have found I have been able to do without or find suitable substitutes for my War of the Ring games.

@Winston Smith, I could not agree more that the Perry's will let us know what we want. I think Carlist Wars range is an excellent example of such. grin

a big loss for WFoundry, a big plus for Perry mins, one of my 3 favourite figure manufacturers!

Good luck with your business chaps!

Ed the Two Hour Wargames guy01 Jul 2014 8:39 a.m. PST

Good for them!

Intrepide01 Jul 2014 8:46 a.m. PST

"And how, exactly, were they 'bound'?"

A portion of their time was locked into corporate requirements. That is no longer the case. How is that so hard to grasp?

KTravlos01 Jul 2014 9:10 a.m. PST

Well it is a gain for the historical war-gaming community!

Zargon01 Jul 2014 10:12 a.m. PST

Aw shucks! John you might just get that little something extra from under the Christmas tree this year after all.
But only if yer a good boy.
