I just picked up some of Wargames Factory's new AWI British, and I'm planning on picking up some of their Continental Infantry and perhaps some Militia figures, too. My problem is, what to do with them!? I'm a long time wargamer but I'm totally new to the AWI period so I have no ideas and was hoping for some suggestions. I'd like to identify a set of rules and a small scenario I could build my collection towards, that won't require a huge number of figures right off the bat. I'm hoping for a maximum of 100 or so figures per side but smaller would get me on the table quicker. These figures come with a lot of options allowing for modeling different units, so I'd like to identify the OOB I need before starting to assemble and paint the miniatures. So, any ideas for a suitable scenario? Rules? Any uniform or battle references I should look into (my current reference library for the AWI consists of two Osprey books; The British Army in North America 1775-1783 and British Redcoat 1740-93). Thanks! |

Depends on the kind of game you want. The rules, "All the King's Men" although designed for the author's 54mm line are a great, fun game. Not too
umm
much of a simulation, though! Infantry units are 14 figures (8 for lights) and 8 for cavalry. And they're free: PDF link Whatever you choose, have fun! Ed |

I'd like to identify a set of rules and a small scenario I could build my collection towards, that won't require a huge number of figures right off the bat. Take a look at Muskets & Tomahawks. It covers the AWI as well as the FIW. Ideal for games involving small forces. |

Eutaw Springs is a small but bloody battle with about 2,000 soldiers per side. The Battle of Oriskany is an even smaller affair (and also very bloody), however you will need some Indians, and I do not know if the boxed sets have the headgear to make the Kings Royal New York regiment of loyalists. At the very least, you can use the battle for some scenario ideas. |

Thanks! All the Kings Men looks promising. A quick look through the rules don't look too hard. Unfortunatly, while the scenario in the back look like fun, they take too many units/figures for a starter game. They also involve some troop types (cavalry and artillery) that arn't available from WF yet. I'm not sure about Muskets & Tomahawks. The website doesn't give a lot of detail on the rules, but its described as a "skirmish" system. I'm really looking for a game that involves formed units, not disordered skimish troops. Thanks also for the scenario ideas. The Cooches Bridge scenario seems like the best bet, although I would have to substitute the Jaegers in the British OOB with more British. Thanks all! |

A good, easy set is "Guns of Liberty". Go to their Yahoo site and contact the author. He'll sell you a copy for about $10. USD Unit size varies, but ranges around 12 to 20 figures per regiment. |

Patriots! From the Perfect Captain is a rule set for small formed unit actions. Also nice are Larry Brom's Disperse Ye Damned Rebels. |

Regardless of which rules you choose, there are three scenario books for the "British Grenadier" AWI rules (with a fourth in preparation) that can be utilised for any ruleset. Figure:man ratios vary from 1:20 down to 1:5, and each book will have 1 or 2 scenarios that will suit your requirements. Equally, with limited numbers of figures you could game a small part of one of the larger scenarios (eg the British left/American right flank of Bunker Hill, which would require just two British units – 47th and 1st Marines – and a proportion of the Rebel militia to hold one side of the redoubt and the stone barn nearby). |
