Happy 80th anniversary!
What if Hitler did not move against Röhm?
What if Röhm moved against Hitler and succeeded?

Could things possibly have gotten worse?

Contemporary foreign reaction: >cough cough<

Herr Adolf Hitler, the German Chancellor, has saved his country. Swiftly and with exorable severity, he has delivered Germany from men who had become a danger to the unity of the German people and to the order of the state. With lightening rapidity he has caused them to be removed from high office, to be arrested, and put to death.
The names of the men who have been shot by his orders are already known. Hitler's love of Germany has triumphed over private friendships and fidelity to comrades who had stood shoulder to shoulder with him in the fight for Germany's future.
~Daily Mail, July 2nd 1934.

Well, it is the Daily Mail. It hasn't changed much.

Wow.

Everybody knows that violent regime change ALWAYS lead to a brighter tomorrow!

interesting question, Rohm had legions of followers but not the backing of the money men nor the Army.
I think Hitler would have eventually moved against him, in the party there can be only one.
I see him being removed in some sort of air accident

Centurian30 Jun 2014 2:33 p.m. PST

It is fascinating to speculate if somehow Rohm had been tipped off, and the SA acted in strength against the SS, Himmler, Goebbels, et al. Would Rohm actually have had Hitler killed in these circumstances?

In the likely civil war that would emerge, with the Reichswehr vs SA, would the Reichswehr just surrender in the face of overwhelming numbers?

And would Rohm felt compelled to attack Poland? Hitler was preoccupied with the east and the idea of Lebensraum – Rohm not so much. Would it have been simply a Germany vs France sort of war, if at any war would have erupted at all?

Just some ideas …

If Rohm "removed" Hitler, I don't think he would have lasted very long at the top. He didn't appear to have anywhere near the same kind of charisma as Hitler..

It worked out pretty well for us Americans. evil grin

This wasn't 'regime change'. Hitler wasn't trying to overthrow his government. It was a purge of possible rivals.

the real question is what could you use for Brownshirts in 28mm
for the Heer I would use Pulps Germans in coalscuttle helmet

Bernhard Rauch30 Jun 2014 6:05 p.m. PST

Very, very bad news for the Hitler Youth!

Did you ever notice that all the Brown Shirts are bloated and piggy looking, with neck rolls hanging over their collars?
While the SS uniforms were designed by Hugo Boss? I'm just sayin'…

There would have been an Afternoon of the Moderately Sized Cudgels, and a present-day demand for a Very German Civil War board. laugh

Ok.. let's run a theory test on counterfactual.

A less right wing government in Germany after a brief internal policing action.

No issue with brave German Jews, who served in previous wars, and the scientists working on secret weapons.

No need for invasion of Poland, so a negotiation on a corridor.

No need for a deal with Russia … and I am assuming no need for a war.

Eventually in the early forties, an event might happen… (pearl harbour) and Russia, Germany, the United states and the United kingdom declares war upon Japan… Italy takes an opportunity to rationalize its conquest in Africa.

After a brief but very vicious war of two years German scientists declare and demonstrate the benefit of nuclear energy…

And peace is declared.

So

No space race.
No moon landings.
No wars against colonial powers.
Britain still rules parts of the globe and has a large and capable fleet.
No effective nuclear weapons or icbm

Possibly a war in the seventies as ideologies break down.

No United nations
No European union

That's assuming no Soviet expansionism--so a Cold War in the early 40's?

If Rohm had rebelled I see the Army moving in to crush him
I think many SA men would have questioned fighting the army
