How many infantry brigades does one actually need to game days 2 and 3 of this battle? My assumption is that not every brigade was engaged every day (I know VI Corps took very few casualties). Is that correct or not?

See the order of battle in the original Fire & Fury rule-book, each day has the amount of brigades and stands needed.

I saved from an earlier thread here:

From the Fire and Fury rule book.

For the CSA you need 3 Corps and 9 division leaders
July 1st 165 inf. (22 brigades) and 18 art. stands
*July 2nd 252 inf. (37 brigades) and 30 art. stands (entire army, minus 36 infantry losses from July 1st)
July 3rd 210 inf. (37 brigades) and 30 art. stands (entire army, minus infantry losses)

For the USA you need 7 Corps and 20 division leaders
July 1st 127 inf. (17 brigades), 11 art. and 14 cav. stands (2 brigades)
*July 2nd 322 inf. (51 brigades) and 39 art. stands (entire army, other than cavalry, minus 40 infantry losses from July 1st)
July 3rd 268 inf. (51 brigades), 38 art. and 10 cav. stands (1 brigade) (entire army, minus infantry losses)

What rules were you going to use? CATenWolde. Thanks for the cut and paste.

Thanks CAT. Looks like all the boys were at the dance.

For big battles, I'm going to try out using V&B as a core (with a few house rules), using Peter Pig's pre-battle rules to provide some unexpected events for the players to deal with, and some variation of the hidden movement system recently described here by the Altar of Freedom folks.

My scaling of V&B for the big games is to use standardized 3" "regimental" stands, representing 1000 men in a single line of battle. We have some simple rules that allow you to use two of these in support as per the normal V&B "brigade" deep bases, but also give the option to deploy on a wider and shallower front if desired. Essentially, the division becomes the maneuver element, composed of a number (usually 6-8) of 1000 man "battle line" stands. We're just starting to experiment with this mix, but I think it will work well.

Cheers,

Christopher

Even units that weren't involved on day 2 or 3 COULD have been. Especially on day 3, by which time the entirety of both armies were on hand.

Embarrassingly enough, I have that scenario book and didn't even think about it until after my post.
