Dear All,

picture

Its not often I dust off my 15mm collection, so I've splurged on some photos for the blogosphere, and shared my thoughts about this eminently practical scale, and why I'll probably never commit to it!

Each to his own I suppose – I love 15's because I can fit thousands of them on a table. And the ranges and scales look right. And I can re-fight some pretty big actions on a 12' x 6' table in my library. Yet you can still pick out individuals and see uniform details, the variations in the weight of horses, the different designs of guns, etc.

Its all fun and its a hobby and we each approach it in our own way and no-one is right or wrong :)

Nice looking collection. Small in numbers, but high quality.

15mm metal or 28mm 'hard' plastic?

Or maybe 20mm 'soft' plastic – that'd be my option …

wink Phil

A lovely collection. 15/18's for me as they are the largest figures I can fit in the house.

ABs?
Lovely work on them.

Your figures look great. I share nsolomon99's views… "it's all fun, and it's a hobby, and we each approach it in our own way, and no one is right or wrong." Richard

Nice! The units look great. Quality over sheer quantity every time.

I've been playing Bolt Action for nearly a year. And while I enjoy the 28mm stuff. It sometimes seems the available table space just isn't enough. So, with the advent of their new armor plt. rules, I've been using my old 15mm stuff for some games. I think this makes for a better game. I've seen forces manage to flank each other without having to incur high casualties on themselves. There's just more table space that way.
I like both and I play both.
I won't try to make the point that 15s are cheaper. As I find that I field more 15s than 28s. So it about evens out.

Thanks gents. Yes I think its very much a case of 'chacun a son gout!' And the expenditure absolutely does even out in the end Lol!

I'm actually planning on shifting my Napoleonics to 3mm, but saving the ABs I already own for skirmishing.

Whatever gets you into the hobby and is enjoyable for you is what counts. Be happy and have a few beers on me while you game! LOL.

Hello my good friend Sparker!

When 15mm first came out the thoughts were they would replace 25mm. That never happened, but a lot of people new to hobby did choose them, and now it seems they are a close second in popularity. In some areas of the world they are number one.

A lot has to do with table space, size of units and the scale of the game people want to play. Cost and time to paint are also considerations for some.

You are clearly blessed with a big group, large tables and a sizeable collection of 25/28. For you I see your 15mm collection as exactly how you used it, a small simple one on one game. To be played every now again when the big games aren't going on.

Best regards,

Glenn

I'm not sure if 15s are actually much easier to paint than 25s – and if you need to do more of them, it probably cancels out pretty quickly.

Two things keep me with 15/18s. First is table space – I like there to be a bit of depth in my battles, so that one side can trade a bit of space for time, etc. I can get a max of 4ft deep at home, and usually its 3 ft. I'd need double that for a decent game with 25s.

The second thing is terrain. I am paying more and more attention to modelling real terrain. I find Bruce Weigle inspiring, even if I will not even try to achieve his level of detail. This automatically pushes you into the smaller scales. Actually 15s are too big: I really can't use scenery bigger than 6mm and get a decent looking table. But quite apart from what I have already, there isn't the right combination of detail and variety of figures in the smaller scales – though 10s are getting better…so I put up with outsized figures.
