So I bought The Third World War: The Untold Story by Sir John Hackett believing it to just be an update of the original The Third World War: August 1985, but there seems to be an indication on the net that it doesn't cover much of the material from the first book.

If so is the original book worth getting?

My two cents: Neither are really great for miniatures gaming, but still interesting reads. Not aware that there's a difference between editions.

Team Yankee takes Hackett's geopolitical scenario and focuses on the small scale battles. That's definitely got mileage for Cold War gamers.

I got Team Yankee as well. I've always wanted to read it since playing the PC game in the '90s.

It's a good enough read, though I think it shows the Soviets in a rather cliche manner. Red Army is almost the same story but told from the Soviet side.

Fun to read, but rather dated (which is completely understandable).

Red Army by Ralph Peters is absolutely outstanding in my view – really good writing as well as knowledgeably put together, and credible in its account of the fighting.

The Third World War book and the Untold Story book are definitely 2 different books.
Untold story deals more with the peripheral actions.

We did a mega-game based on the Soviet attack on the Dutch town of Venlo taken from The Third World War

I preferred Thirld World War. Untold Story had too much political background and was more in depth…..

Thanks guys.

I enjoyed it, and since it's available in paperback, you should be able to get it used for a very reasonable price.
