I know that I've seen some posts with clever "Chinese" names . . . can someone kindly direct me to such, please?

Hoo Flung Dung?
Wun Hung Lo?

Then of course there are the Chinese characters in G&S's "The Mikado"

McWong7330 Jun 2014 2:28 a.m. PST

They're meant to be Japanese in the Mikado, FYI.

Duh!! Yes, of course. Silly me! The names are still fun though.

I know that there have been some Pulp Game reports with some characters with quasi-Chinese names. What I'm hoping for is some links to those threads.

How about giving them real names, and avoid making fun of an element of society.

Belittling another culture for a cheap laugh… sounds like a poor excuse.

Sorry to come over so politically correct, but if we don't challenge racism then we are allowing racism to continue.

(I am sure if you want funny names a trip to Google will give you them)

Sobieski30 Jun 2014 4:23 a.m. PST

A Chinese friend of mine called Feng Yi (Excellent Phoenix) was rash enough to tell us that her nickname as a little girl was Mao To (Fuzzy Head), which she was called thereafter without exception.

Zargon30 Jun 2014 4:27 a.m. PST

Yoo P Wang
Too Muchpoo
Fly ling Pan
Ich ee Dong (he's Vietnamese ;)
Soo Long Time (female)

Come on, this is fun chaps.

But what fun would that be?

I have used the names of real Chinese officials – if you google Central Committee of the Communist Party of China you get a long list

For our Pulp games I have used the names of Warlord Generals

link

(and in case you are wondering, that ridiculous looking uniform with the huge plume was actually the real dress uniform for a general of the Chinese Republic)

A number of warlord era generals also had fairly descriptive nicknames – they have some in the Osprey book on this topic – like "Stubby Melon", "Rotten Pig" and "Two Headed Snake" – my favourite being "The Dog Meat General"

I don't know how accurate the results are, but this name generator makes random chinese sounding names, as well as practically anything else. It's especially useful for melting-pot cyberpunk settings like Shadowrun.

When the pandas were released for World of Warcraft, I wanted to name mine Tsingtao after the beer. Of course, this was not allowed. So I changed it a little, and used Lingtao. After about 18 months of playing my character, someone pointed out that Lingtao was a chinese slang for "dumb ass." Oops.

>>I know there are folks who make a point of "funny" names, but I've been turned off by them<<

Me too. Heroic and/or evil characters in my games are usually straight out of The Pulps, but any made up characters will have typical names that you would find in any Pulp Era fiction.

jpattern230 Jun 2014 9:46 a.m. PST

Add me to the "no funny names" list, especially since what might seem high-larious to one gaming group usually falls flat with everyone else. "You had to be there" is the last refuge of failed "comedians." laugh

Is it racism if I also give funny names to my American and European characters?

Jcfrog30 Jun 2014 10:45 a.m. PST

Open IMDB and find some Chinese or Hong kong made movies….see the cast and crew.
if you need jokes just chose…

Funny names only work if they are actually funny. Generally they aren't.

Have you ever seen the business signs on model railway layouts? They are often full of puns like "Frank Furter – Meat Processing". Brilliant stuff.

Cacique Caribe30 Jun 2014 11:24 a.m. PST

Warwell: "Is it racism if I also give funny names to my American and European characters?"

I know!!! I'm so sick of all that constant one-sided self-righteous PC propaganda! It's so hypocritical.

Well, if it's good for the goose, then I imagine it will have to apply to the gander. If it's really bad, then it should be bad for ALL and ANYONE to do it, right?

So …

I HEREBY PROCLAIM THAT, FROM THIS DAY FORWARD, ANY NON-CAUCASIAN THAT GIVES FUNNY NAMES TO ANY OF HIS CAUCASIAN-LOOKING FIGURES SHALL BE SUBJECTED TO THE ABSOLUTE SAME LEVEL OF OSTRACISM.

That should do it, I hope.

After all, didn't Maddaz111 say that "if we don't challenge racism then we are allowing racism to continue"?

Dan
PS. If the PC crowd wants to go from the subject of race to that of culture … oh please, don't get me started.

The Shadow30 Jun 2014 12:14 p.m. PST

I'm not calling it "racism" when people use what they think is a funny pun as a name for a character. I just think it's dumb and not funny at all.

morrigan30 Jun 2014 3:59 p.m. PST

Gaming solo can be good…..

Zargon30 Jun 2014 4:34 p.m. PST

Wounderful, morrigan wins, haha

There is a difference between funny and insulting though not all are capable of differentiating between the two.

If a non-caucasians giving funny "english" names to his "caucasian looking figures" does it the the context of the english culture and humour, using terms, puns and associations which are part of the "caucasion" culture and in the english language. Then I think it is generally fine.

Same with caucasians giving "funny" chinese names though I think leaving out the language criteria is fine:-)

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of insulting distortions of "caucasian" names being written by Chinese. Perhaps more often on Chinese language boards where the same complete lack of understanding and knowledge result in the same more "insulting" than "funny".

Give me a truely funny chinese joke name that has the same reference to chinese culture or heritage as good funny pulp "caucasian" joke names have to their culture and heritage. That I can appreciate and applaud and laugh.

Even an attempt would be appreciated.

The examples of "funny" names given above are only vaguely chinese soundng, only "funny" in the english language and caucasian stereotypes and mainly just bad "chinesification" of random english insults. I mean "dong", "poo", "prostitute" and "cooks"!!!!!!

The Shadow30 Jun 2014 10:07 p.m. PST

BooneC

Are you serious?! Aren't you over analyzing? A dumb pun is a dumb pun in *any* language.

Boone Doggle01 Jul 2014 7:10 a.m. PST

You're prob right laugh. I really should stick to comments on 15mm fantasy.

scotch and off to bed.

I think there are a number of gamers that think they are just so clever coming up with names that appeal to a fifth grader's sense of humor.

I admit to being Chinese and finding these kind of names a bit insulting in that you are making fun of the way our names sound. I find it inappropriate to make fun of anyone's name regardless of the race or culture. However it's just my opinion and I just wanted to express it. if your group appreciates that type of humor then I hope that you have fun.

Cacique Caribe01 Jul 2014 7:33 p.m. PST

No need to make stuff up. Those who think they have it all figured out about another race, culture or language, usually provide more than enough comedy, and at their own expense.

Just google "funny signs" if you think I'm exaggerating.
