I've read on a couple of occasions that Germans attacking Douamont were wearing something like French Zouave hats. (I think in the Michelin guide it asserts the Germans were wearing French Zouave uniforms – I find that hard to believe).

And I recently came across a reference to the attack at the beginning on Driant's chasseurs that the Germans were wearing caps "similar to ours."

I'm puzzled by these references. Is it just observations of Feldmutz in use, or was there some studied deception on the part of the attacking Germsn?

I'm thinking it is because the Germans removed the spike from their picklehaubes. The looked similar to a cloth covered Adrain helmet.
