I am after a simple way, is it best to paint a light brown then an ink wash? or anything simpler, im going from Moderns to a new era so need some advice

Minwax(tm) stains come in many colors now.
check it out at your friendly local hardware store.

Also remember many Western buildings were either left as unfinished wood which would weather to gray or were whitewashed.
