My pals & I are planning a move to the ECW, using the FoG rules (we currently use them for Bronze Age & Punic)

I am not very knowledgeable on the period & would appreciate some advice as to poses for Foot regiments.

If, for instance, you had the musketeers firing, how should the pike stand? If moving to melee, would all pikes be lowered? Any advice, photos or links would be welcome.

Check out Fat Wally's blog some nice inspiration there.

If you are not going to have 'spacer bases' out in front of your pike I would suggest pike should be as near vertical as possible to stop 'figure clash'.

Not ECW, but I find this angle is fine

But this angle is a gaming pain

Sometimes it's not just about what looks good, as you might find if go for levelled pike.

Your FoG-R rules and Army list do help you build your armies and it has lots of colour pickys.

Having your musketeers all firering is fine, but it dose make them look a little like Swedish volley fire troops.
Most musketeers fire is by introduction each rank comes to the front and fires then goes to the back and reloads.

As for pikemen, pike at the "charge" and "receiving horse" poses, have an advantage that they are easier to store, the pikes will overhang the bases and will cause problems when they enter melee.

Pike at "the order"(but on the ground), at "the advance"(pike vertical and marching),at "the shoulder"(on the shoulder held at 45 degrees and marching) and at "the port" (held across the body).

I favour Pikes at the at "the order" and or at "the advance"
with the musketeers 1/2 the stands firing and 1/2 the stands loading.

There is a lot out there on the net about the English Civil War,
I would pick a coat colour (you like to paint) match the coat colour to a regiment then look up the regiment and see what you find.

Good luck.

@ Mac

A very useful reply (I'm going to create a Covenanters army).

Mac's advice on the pikes is spot on. With the shot having front rank firing and rear ranks loading or advancing is fine. If you have the pikes marching then the muskets look best marching.

I have my command on separate vignette round bases, this enables me to swap unit IDs as I wish and also it means you can get them out of the way behind a pike block if you end up with a traffic jam of bases in a melee.

Ochoin

You have picked the least colourful army,Hodden gray.
Make the most of your officers, colours(flags) and the few Highlander there are in your army,
Remember there is little to no body armour on Cvenanters.

The one good thing they fight in all 3 civil wars, the Bishops wars and they fight Montross in Scotland and the Irish in Ulster.

Good Luck Mac
