I see that you've correctly deduced that the only way to get early Germans to arrive at a social engagement at the same time as late Germans is to stick them on the same base.

If, as appears to be the case, they're intended to depict warriors, did you consider the buckler/small shield option?

I have an unpainted army's worth of those figures, but have decided that they'll make better Franks than Saxons; so it'll be big shields for mine, too (unless someone has evidence that the Franks also used bucklers).

I decided to add larger shields painted with Late Roman army patterns in case some "former" legionnaires took their shield with them!
