Sadly Eli Wallach has died

He played the Mexican bandit leader,Calvera, in The Magnificent Seven and the "Ugly" in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. He also appeared in How the West Was Won and The Misfits.

The part of Juan Miranda in Duck, You Sucker! or A Fistful of Dynamite was written for him and, IMO, he would have been brilliant in it.

Unfortunately he didn't get to appear in it and even more unfortunately Rod Steiger took the part

Adiós Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez, known as 'The Rat' – thanks for entertaining me

Too bad. The passing of an iconic actor.

"Why? A man like you….

"If you're going to shoot…shoot..don't talk!"

Truly one of the great ones.

He also played Napoleon in 'The Adventures of Gerard'. Another Rod Steiger connection? Whatever, he was a great actor.

Very sad

He had such good lines, too

"One Armed Man: I've been looking for you for 8 months. Whenever I should have had a gun in my right hand, I thought of you. Now I find you in exactly the position that suits me. I had lots of time to learn to shoot with my left.

[Tuco kills him with the gun he has hidden in the foam]

Tuco: When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk."

"Tuco: There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend: Those with a rope around the neck, and the people who have the job of doing the cutting.

Blondie: You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."

That's a real shame. He always played the villain so easily but never in a way that made you really hate him. I had always thought if his character was real, he'd of run for Congress.

Great actor – R.I.P

I am always using the "two kinds of people " quote in real life.

One of my favorites – truly a legend.

A great actor who enhanced any film in which he appeared. RIP.

A great actor, look for a full day of his movies on TMC maybe in a few days.

His Tuco portrayal should of been up for an oscar. But an Italian western would of never even been considered.

Yep, a truly talented character actor.

RIP.

He was really good in "The Holiday".
His first acting gig was in 1951, last in 2010 passed at age 98. Wow what a life.
But I read this thread and felt sad….

Not sure I can think of a better baddie. Another part of my childhood gone.

Winston0126 Jun 2014 11:59 a.m. PST

He was a great actor added so much to films he was in I had no idea he had lived so long.

IainAF26 Jun 2014 1:56 p.m. PST

I too was sad to hear the news, the Magnificent Seven is one of my all time favourites.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned that he was also in one of the greatest war films of all time (imho) – The Victors – and gives a fantastic performance as usual.
