Gents –
Almost finished reading Con Coughlin's very good book CHURCHILL'S FIRST WAR – Young Winston at War with the Afghans.

Quite an interesting look at the young PMs life and exploits in the far-flung reaches of the Empire. There's more information about his relationship with his mum (a bit too close, some might say) and his evident problem with staying solvent.

Lots of wargaming potential (skirmish, role-play, small actions, and campaigns) as he gets into action, finally, and experiences being under fire.

Admit that I am strongly tempted to try and set up something "quick and dirty" using modified BP.

Recommended read for anyone interested in learning about Churchill, reading about the Empire in the latter 19th century, or adding up the similarities between the Imperial experience the American experience when fighting in the rocks and scrub of the Malakand region.

Churchill's own "The Story of the Malakand Field Force, 1897" is also a great read. His description of the Afghans sadly echoes current accounts.

Winston's The River War about the later Soudan adventures is equally good!
