Yes, finally after some hard work my next book is out on the role of the Netherlands field army in the 1815 campaign.

"Standing firm at Waterloo" presents you the history of the army and its men, from the highest to the lowest ranks, during the retreat on 17 June and the battle on 18 June.

The sheer magnitude of new primary resources, the great artwork and everything else ensures this will be one of the great books on Waterloo that really adds new information.

For more information and to order, look here: 1815fieldarmy.nl/books/3-book-3

Or otherwise take a look directly here: lulu.com/spotlight/erwinmk12

With 3 volumes out now it is just amasing to share 724 pages of new historical information!

So, just to be clear. The difference in the two paperback versions is that the more expensive has some colour in it?

E Muilwijk24 Jun 2014 12:39 p.m. PST

Yes indeed, the full colour illustrated edition has almost all of the illustrations etc. as it does say: in colour. In case that is not important to you, as I well understand, simply choose the B&W-illustrated edition ;-)

Good news Erwin, been waiting for this one!

Lord Hill24 Jun 2014 4:02 p.m. PST

Hi Erwin, this looks very interesting and I will try to get a copy.
Out of interest, can I ask about muster rolls etc for the Dutch/Belgian/Nassau forces – what exists for research today?
Are there regimental musters, such as for the British army held at the Public Record Office in Kew?
If so, what kind of info do they hold? Do they provide numbers for casualties for each unit?

Would be very interested to hear what the situation is – I've spent the last 15 years doing research for the British army, and have often wondered what equivalent archives exist for all the other armies at Waterloo.

I have been collecting this series and it has been excellent. Full of information and still very readable. I have always had an interest in the Netherlands Army of 1815 and this has fulfilled the requirement for facts perfectly. I seem to have read somewhere that there will be a fourth volume. I wonder what that will be about?

E Muilwijk25 Jun 2014 7:50 a.m. PST

Let me come back to that Lord Hill later this week, as there is such information, i.e. regimental records (without proper casulaty figures) and records from the "Fonds 1815" that payed families of killed and to the individuals wounded for many years on end.

Thanks Erwin, I shall be picking it up

Edwulf25 Jun 2014 6:11 p.m. PST

Yes. I'll looking forward to acquiring copy.

E Muilwijk27 Jun 2014 8:22 a.m. PST

Thanks for all the nice comments! ;-)

@ Artilleryman: volume 4 will be about the invasion into France, the various sieges of towns in northern France by the Netherlands troops, the march to Paris and the return of the field army in December 1815. Also more information on other parts of the army getting mobilised, or the voluntary companies added, and much much more.

But first a pause…! And paint my French Guard figures for a large game in August :-)

For the best book on the role of the Netherlands field army at Waterloo, yes indeed that army of Dutch, Belgians and Nassau soldiers, you should think seriously of buying "Standing firm at Waterloo".

1815fieldarmy.nl/books/3-book-3

A book jammed with an impossible amount of dozens of new accounts from officers and soldiers who fought at Waterloo, or kept their guard at Halle.
A book filled with an incredible amount of historical unknown artwork, photographs, portraits and paintings from Dutch museums.
The only book that seriously provides new information based on archival reasearch, on this level.
All from the perspective of Netherlands veterans at Waterloo.

A must for every aficionado on this ulitimate and final battle.

Or just browe back through the news items!

Many authors worldwide have acclaimed I am doing a wonderful job, by collecting a massive amouint of Netherlands source material over the past ten years, together with other friends like Pierre de Wit.
It is only through such massive new research that one can enjoy a wider look upon the campaign and its battles.

Most important and very nice have been the numerous authors, that incorporated my publications, or its various research, into their own books (i.e. note apparatuses and bibliographies, or primary sources published in English based upon Pierre and mine translations). In just three years since 2012 many authors have acknowledged the importance of this new research into the Netherlands field army.

These day I want to share information with you, and convince you of this research trip through history, and its left-behind documents all over archives and private family collections.

So, please enjoy!
