Hi, obviously there is no standard organisation, but if one was about to start a Hussite army then what would be the basis from where to work and what would the army look like in rough percentages.

cheers
jon

if this makes no sense i will try and be clearer.

if you can get access to the fields of glory army list books, or warhammer ancient battles' armies of chivalry book, they have nice basic percentages for starter armies. sorry that I cant get to them now to check for you.

from what I understand, you cant go wrong with at least half peasant troops with crossbows, a few guns, and various flails, bills, etc. probably 75% or more would be better. then add a couple wagons to mount them in.

for cavalry, I believe they had the support of some lords and knights and such, but mostly more lightly armored riders. then you of course need a cool, blind leader with bandages around his eyes!

I am by no means well schooled in this army, so listen to others before you take my advice!

Below is phil barkers take on a Hussite army for DBA. Think of it as building blocks for larger armies. Each item represents 1 stand

Hussite Army:
1 x General (stand of Knights or blades or war wagon WWg),
1 x mounted crossbowmen (LH),
4 x halberdiers and flail-men (4Bd),
5 x war wagons crewed by crossbowmen and handgunners (WWg),
1 x houfnice on specialist wagon (Art) or Polish knights (3Kn).

I agree, the WAB books are still valid for army composition- as a guide.

Have you made up your mind what sort of ruleset you fancy using?

That way it will be easier to help out.

Darrell.

What rules will you use ? I think the Hussites will struggle to give much of a game in the standard medieval pitched battle. They are very static and it means the opponent will refuse to attack your war wagons and just pick off any troops left outside of their protection. I think you really need some specially designed scenarios to make this type of army work.

we have been using "free company" which is quite scenario driven.

Hussites without war wagons are like chips without fish, bearable but wrong!
