I'm toying with the idea of using the new Airfix Mary Rose kit link as the basis for a somewhat non-historical Tudor-era fleet (TudorImagifleet). Should work. But
argh
so annoying that it's only available as a "gift pack/starter set" with glue, paint and a bad brush. Adds £2.00 GBP to every model (compared to a basic 1/72nd aircraft at £5.99 GBP). It's "only £2.00 GBP", but I'm thinking of a dozen or more so it adds up. I know it's new – but has anyone built one ? How easy is it to make it a waterline model ? Thanks In Advance. |

Hi 20thmaine, I've seen the prototype and it's a nice (although quite small) model. I'm guessing it has been designed to be a pocket money souvenir at the new museum for the real ship in Portsmouth. The model can seen at the top left hand corner of the (poor quality) photo, The 1/72 scale planes on the left will hopefully give you a sense of the size of the model.
Regards, Matt |

I am sure it is probably a full hull model. It would probably be kind of tough to cut down to the waterline. I'm not certain this is the way to go. You have to kick in a couple of pounds for the extra glue and paint and THEN do a big mod? I say look for something else. |

Better images here (a german website) link If its anything like their other similar sized sailing ship models then cutting it down to the waterline, and converting to other ships, should be pretty simple. Bearing in mind the market this is aimed at (i.e. not wargamers) I think its pretty good. |

Have you seen these kits from Zvezda? They look interesting, and not too expensive. They apparently come with full hulls, but include a recessed waterline stand specifically for gamers. I've not seen these ship model kits "in person" but have built a number of Zvezda 1/35 scale WWII models -- generally very decent kits. I've bought from Squadron a number of times -- they have always been reliable. link link |

Thanks everyone – I had seen the Zvezda ships, I think I could mix them in with the Mary Rose for an imaginavy. I hope I do this – it's looking a lot of fun! |

This would be great with the old blister-packed Airfix kits I've waterlined! |
