Is Saga the new tournament vehicle for ancients? I see it played everywhere, even at small cons. There is talk of tournaments in central Florida this year. I just jumped in with both feet based on my gut feeling that there will finally be ancients tournaments in my life again.

Any thought?

Is Saga the new tournament vehicle for ancients?

No. There are lots of other ancients rules in use and there are many tournaments for these different rules as well as Saga.

Not that I play in tournaments …

It think it is fair to say that it is the newest tournament vehicle for ancients.

It plays fast, so you can get a 4 round tournament done in a day and still have plenty of time to hit the vendors.

However I don't think it will ever replace the established tournament games, because they really aim at a different niche. And that is fine. (unless you want to do both and they are at the same time)

DBMM, DBA, and FoG are mainly 15mm. In 28mm I don't think any rules set have replaced WAB since it's demise.

SAGA is simple, quick, and requires few figures. The only problem is that it's not really designed for ancients, and I don't think this will change any time in the near future. In addition, their battle boards are so faction specific that a great increase in their number could produce some fanciful armies (if it hasn't already).

With the end of WAB, Saga is looking like the best unified rule set for tournament play. At Adepticon, Saga played well last year and will be the featured Ancients tournament this coming year.

Saga is another game, and providing you like it all well and good.

It's unlikely however to scratch the same itch as warhammer ancients.

Very different kind of games.

I don't do war game tournament games as they do not normally help simulate something.

I played 7th for years than switched to DBM. Then too many revisions ruined it for me. Now neither is supported. Don't dig FoG all that much. I haven't played many skirmish level games…sword & flame, pig wars, but the talk here is growing loud enough for me to give it a go.

I appreciate the diverse commentary and POV expressed thus far. I have to say TMP seems less hostile than it used to be.

Hans G: I realize it is medieval, but from an old WRG grognard it is the same thing :)

I think people play SAGA because it is actually fun, and not a slog thru mock recreation that is doomed to fail.

Tournaments would work because the game is still balanced, yet requires some planning and skill to go w/ the luck of the dice.

Cool game!

"Is Saga the new tournament vehicle for ancients?"

yes and no

tournament vehicle certainly but more Dark Age (and Crusades/Medieval coming up) than Ancient

and less of a headache :)

if you went thru the 7th/DBM WRG cycle (as I did, started on 4th WRG) you are probably 15mm , multifig base, larger army oriented, Saga is more for 28mm single based

but at our club we re-use Saga figs with Dux Bellorum (and Impetus to be tried, with Lion Rampant on the horizon)

I say SAGA is for people who don't like tournament games. That is why I play. I dislike DBA even though the periods it covers really interest me. Saga is for now just one period – Early Medieval. I think if they expand it, it will branch out BUT there are barriers:

Funny dice are hard to get and expensive. People make their own, of course.

The rules are priced really high. To get everything is $100 USD or more IF you can find it in stock.

However it is a load of fun to play. I have a 2nd copy of the rules to give away at one of the local game days. I think if they could do a new run of the rules, consolidated and made so that they are easier to get the game would be everywhere and more popular – but thats my peanut gallery opinion.

I did the same. DBM killed it for me.

Then I found Saga a year ago and the excitement is back! And I can see well enough in my old age to paint 28mm figures too!! Ahhhhhhh! Life is good.

Sound exciting. Guess now that I have the figs, I'd better read the rules :)

Our small, but growing group, will be taking a good look at SAGA during Historicon. It certainly looks appealing and with some clever mechanisms, SAGA may end up on our tables. None of us have any figs but those can be had for reasonable prices. Too bad the rules aren't in PDF…if so, I would've already made a purchase.

Gorkathustra04 Jul 2014 3:50 p.m. PST

Uh does SAGA even have army lists for ancients? Clash of Empires is the only thing I ever see for small tourneys.

FatherLucant06 Jul 2014 6:24 p.m. PST

No, it doesn't have any official ancient rules, thought there are fan made rules. Those are pretty solid too, the forums have their own sub group for them.

I love the game and I'm trying to get the rest of my gaming group in on them as well. Can't wait for the new expansion!
