Since em4's Doug is rereleasing a whole raft of Spacelords figures, I thought it was time to ask a long-standing question: What do Phagon Battle-clones look like under their armour? Battle clones look like this fully armoured:
There seem to be no models showing their faces in the whole Spacelords range, and I decided I wanted to make some unmasked officers and civilians of the race the clones were grown from. Perhaps they're grown into their exoskeletons like crabs, but evne crabs moult! And I suspect the sculptor intended a face beneath the sci-fi armour. I wanted something that echoed the helmet design: bug-eyed, insectile, slightly blank and menacing. After trawling for suitable heads, I bought these from black cat bases:
They size up really well, so I'm looking forward to completing the conversions, but since I bought them, black cat bases has had a lot of problems. So what else might you guys choose as the true face of a phagon battle clone? |

NIce idea! Makes me wish I hadn't sold off all my Phagons a couple years back. |

Thanks Patrick! Weirdly enough, it was the phagons that got me back into 28mm sci fi a couple of years ago! |

OK, now for some Spacelords lore about the Phagon battle clones as related to me by someone who was the manager at D&J Hobby in Campbell, CA and who was also (A) fluent in German and (B) communicated directly with Metal Magic/Hobby Products back when the world was young and Space Lords was a new and growing figure line with its own game system
. Phagon Battle Clones are in fact clones of *humans,* people! That's right, the Phagons are masters of bioengineering, and as a means of turnabout is fair play ( and a horned headed nod to the fighting prowess of human beings) they cloned a captured human soldier and added some special modifications while the Phagons were at it to produce a particularly nasty and especially tough and resilient vat grown soldier for their war against the hated Terrans. Battle Clones were noticibly stronger than stock humans IIRC, and more troubling still, were able to regenerate wounds that were short of catastrophic right then and there on the battlefield(!), making them particularly persistent and frustrating opponents for the poor, hapless Cybertechs and Yoyodyne that had to face them. Further, there was supposedly two new alien races that MM/HP were getting set to release when they went under. I have not yet seen any photos, but my contact at D&J Hobby described them to me as one being a pulp fictiony little green men analogue and the other being a wolf or bear like alien trooper. Alas, those were some fun days of non-Games Sweatshop corporate junk coming from more than one Indy figure maker where imagination rather than a corporate obsession with the bottom line drove the creativity and productivity of companies like Metal Magic/Hobby Products. Nice to see EM4 bringing these classic sci if figures back to us! Now if Doug and company would just flesh out the Yoyodyne Shigaru, as I need a few more heavy machine gunners, rocket launchers, and assault riflemen, dammit! Leland R. Is the Space Lords fluff still available anywhere? I'd be interested in reading it (even in German) if it's available somewhere. |

Leland, How interesting, seeing as many years ago now, I bought the display pieces D&J had of Space Lords. They were mounted on balsa wood shelves and painted in some rather garish colors. Good to know that soon I may be able to fill out their ranks. |

Outlaw, I too scored from D&J all those aeons ago, as I happened to walk in after they'd marked down their Space Lords figures for clearance and the sale box ranneth over, so I cleaned up on Cybertechs and Yoyodyne Shigaru

Thanks for the background history to the phagons, Leland – really interesting informative stuff. And I totally agree with your other comments, too – those were good times for indy comapnies – bit I think we're in quite a renaissance now, with a lot of great small companies putting out really interesting figures. Another good reason to support Doug's project! Getting wistful now
If only MM had lasted long enough to put out thsoe wolf or bear aliens. Would've loved to see how that potential range developed. And on a final note – while it's interesting to know that the battle-clones were supposed to be re-engineered humans, I'm sticking with my interpretation, and going with the bug-eyed heads from Black Cat Bases. Long live the remorseless bug-eyed alien phagon empire! |

Alas, what I am seeing is a great deal of repetition of style these days, but perhaps that's just my old fogies' jaundiced eye playing up again
Now you've got me looking at my unfinished mob of Phagon war walkers, and seriously considering updating my blog with shots of my Phagons, their Battle Clone minions, their beasties, and other mischief Metal Magic like my Sardaykyn Legion detachments

' You're certainly right about the tiresome repetition, Leland
another so-called 'new release', War Prime as detailed on this very board: yet another oversized GW knock-off. But there is also a lot of great stuff from companies like Khurasan, Splintered Light, Four A, CP Models, Ironclad and so forth
and of course, champions like Doug for resucitating classic ranges. Looking forward to see what you do with al those phagon and cybertech forces
I don't have any walkers, so here's hopnig Doug casts some up soon! |
