Any opinions for the best Hundred Years War Rules?
I usually play with Impetus recently i tried ''Flower of Chivalry'' for a change and in my house i have ''Tactica medieval'' that i have never tried before and i am thinking of giving it a shot..
my armies are 25-28mm and quite large because i have been painting for 2-3 years…
any input from more experienced Medieval War gamers

Thank you
Nicholas

I use Hail Caesar.

Passiveaggressive……fine…but with what modifications

I have used WAB in the past and it works pretty well.

I have used War and Conquest, which also seems to work very well.

I use 'Field of Glory' with the "Storm of Arrows' supplement. For WoR, too.

I used WRG (very realistic) DBA(nice) Ancient warfare (very good) WAB ( very Bad) and i can recomment Matt Fritz Junior General rules.

Period specific rules are of course potentially the most satisfying way to go. But expensive too if you're not cooking up your own.

I've always felt that the way to go is "one set to rule them all". Then you can add on a few specific "house rules" to tweak the "One Set" to fit the given scenario.

If your rules cover the ancmed period, by providing good results from copious play-testing of historical battles, then you have a good system. If it's fun to play in the bargain then, "by Grabthar's hammer, what a savings".

I've played/researched HYW for most of gaming career.

DBM up to (but not including) 3.0 worked well. The new DBA 3.0 works suprisingly well.

Not so good:

Although 'Poleaxed' by Skytrex dates to the seventies my memory tells me it was mechanically ahead of its time – and of course it's particular to the late medieval period.

Is this the same rule set taken up by the Lance and Longbow Society? If so it's a great rule set and worth a try- cheep too!

At present Hail Caesar, with some modifications, would be my personal choice at present but I've played using Impetus with a lot of success too. HC has the advantage that you should be able to find more players willing to give it a go too as it is undoubtedly more widely distributed than most other rule sets.

Darrell.

The Coat of Steel rules being discussed elsewhere, have good feel of the accounts of battle and war of the later middle ages… the would need some simple mods and there is discussion of adding in more options for cavalry in some up coming updates, It is certainly already for a pretty good fit for the later part of the HYW, being they are WotR…
They would be my choice as they are about the only rules sets that actually evokes the feel of medieval battle through how the rules are structured and written and the nature of the mechanisms…

Fantasy Warriors HYW expansion…

DBA 2.2 or 2.2+ works quite well for small games or big battle versions. I've been gradually building up a pile of armies centered around the campaigns of the Black Prince and John of Gaunt.

We had a good 100 Years War game last night using the Sword & Spear rules TMP link.
The rules worked well for this period and gave a good game (but as the author I am biased), and they will work with your Impetus based units.
I'll post a full AAR in a day or two but here are a couple of pictures from the game:

Where can one get hold of the HYW expansion for Fantasy Warriors

GGouveia02 Jul 2014 7:33 a.m. PST

For 100 years war my vote goes to Terry Gore's Medieval Warfare.
