I have played the last of the games in the Normandy campaign. I have enjoyed getting out the 20mm toys and playing a series of games. This last game is a very open battlefield that the British had to cross in the face of Grmans deployed in a woodline. The full report can be found here at this blog post: link I also have a short discussion about mt own rules I used for them. In summary, they were OK, but I will be adding in some stuff I left behind from earlier rules I have written. Herr is a shot of the only German armour in the game – a Jagdpanzer in the woods:

Neat. Did you have any smoke from artillery available? I think that you should retain your "to hit" vs infantry in the open--it should be relatively easy to get hits on someone who is not hugging terrain. Good luck with your rules. Rob |

Shaun, I agree that 4+ is probably too generous for anti-infantry fire. That open space looks a scary prospect. |

Excellent Shaun! Very interesting rules. I need more time to digest them ;) |

rob, the scenario does not call for smoke, and the rules the scenario is written for (Kampfegruppe Normandy) has no smoke rules – you roll for observation each turn. I did think I should have added some smoke availability to some of the scenarios but I wanted to try them as written. In hindsight, a bit of smoke should have been available. I am wavering between 4+ and 5+. It is really only against troops in the open. And open at this scale is not really that open and "open" would have ditches and uneven ground. My dithering is also that MGs roll 4 dice and so can inflict a lot of damage on a unit (as historically!). today, I am back to 4+ but added a modifier for infantry target moving and reduced MGs down to 3 dice. John – the rules are changing as we speak, but I really do want to try out the new version soon. However, it will be in 6mm, and may be company level ( I will incorporate some of the Battalion level rules in to the Company level ones). |
