Fourth Crusade. "The Fourth Crusade (1202-4) was proclaimed by Innocent IV with the aim of recovering the Holy Places in Palestine. However, the Crusade was financed by the Venetians and at once was diverted to their own ends. In April 1204 this led to the sack of Constantinople, the greatest city in Christendom, and the establishment of a "Latin Empire" there for the next few decades. This enormously significant event, which destroyed any remaining credibility in the whole Crusading enterprise, is still a mystery to many in the West. This account is an attempt to understand the apocalyptic events of 1204, to explAin how and why they happened, and to examine the context in which they occurred. It is the story of how an army that went forth in the name of God lost sight of its fundamental motivations and how a misguided idealism can often lead to disaster"

Good Rant: Well I am going to get dawghoused, but this is why I roll my eyes when I hear the descendants of Franks, Lomabards, Saxons and Germans wail about the "great islamic threat". They destroyed my ancestors civilization (and no, I can actually trace my blood to eastern rome, so this is not some oh we are all descendants of ancient greeks or whatnot). All the Turks got in 1453 is gutted ruins. In 1204 one of the great cities of the earth and one of the great civilizations was destroyed. At least the Pope had the guts to apologize. Rant over. |

The Fourth Crusade
is still a mystery to many in the West. Not really, Venice advanced money to the Crusaders, which they couldn't pay, and to pay the debt the Crusaders were at the beck and call of Venice. |

I used to know a Kantakouzinos family. At the time I didn't realise quite how blue the blood I was fraternising with was. |

How many centuries does it have to be before people let it go? |

Lose the memory, and it gets let go. The "West" is amazed at the length of Islam's "memory". But this kind of topic proves that they don't have a monopoly on remembering outrageous injustice

Well, considering that Islam played no part in this sack maked the "remembering" even more notable. While pondering the injustices of 1204, lets also take a second to remember the victims of the major progrom of 1182, usually called the "massacre of the Latins". This certainly not started the animosity but it made it a bloody slaughter. Without that massacre, 1204 would most likely not have happened. |
