Anyone know the whereabouts of detailed maps suitable for 5th – 7th May that don't have troop dispositions all over them? I've trawled the Library of Congress but they all seem to have positions drawn, or actual units. I'm sure there were some period maps of Virginia but they have a new site layout that's confusing me and I can't seem to find the right Counties. |

Perhaps it won't help you now but
Savas Beatie (the book publisher) is at work on the next "Maps
" book on the battle of the Wilderness. Supposedly the work by the author is complete but the company has just about started their work. No time frame when it will be out. Fredricksburg is in line next. |

Love their books, The Wilderness will be on my list. Not so sure about Fredericksburg though! Do you know if it will cover just the first few days or stretch further into the campaign? |

Not sure why Fredericksburg was chosen. I would rather have seen Seven Day's, Shiloh, Chancellorsville, 1862 Valley campaign, 2nd Bull Run, Bentonville, Sherman's drive south etc. done well before Fredericksburg. Oh well. No word if the other 1864 Overland battles will follow. Sorry. |

The two days of the Wilderness were very confusing. I can certainly see one book showing all the movements of this one battle. I can't imagine the research it took to try to even begin to sort out that mess on the regimental level. |

Actually there's point. Given most units didn't have a clue where they were at one time or another I'd have thought more than a few of the maps will be conjecture. Having said that there's no shortage of period (or just after) maps that claim to show what was where, all be it in pretty broad brush terms – nothing below Brigade kind of thing. There again, when you read a book as good Rhea's on the subject the actual dispositions on a map don't really matter too much as you get so absorbed in the prose. |
