If you've ever been a corporate drone like myself, you've probably grown used to being bludgeoned to death with PowerPoint (PPT) pitches. It's approaching the point where PPT deserves its own article under the Hague Conventions, next to the chemical weapons and frangible bullets.

But PPT is also incredibly flexible and useful for drawing, and that's what makes it of value to the wargaming community. PPT has a lot of the tools built into it which make for easy illustrations, line drawings, etc., that can be difficult to do in Photoshop and Illustrator (I can't speak for CorelDraw, as I've never used it). Using the "Edit Points", "Align", "Glow", "Group", and other functions makes for easy and fairly accurate work for someone who otherwise has the artistic prowess of an epileptic clam.

The rest is here on my blog, so I won't waste TMP bandwidth by reposting it all here!

Cool stuff! Great application of the program.

Outstanding. Do you have to be a whiz at excel and ppt to do this. For example, how would you do the unit cards, especially the link between the ppt design and the hidden cells? Many thanks for the ideas.

Yes, it is a great tool for gaming.

@Lost Wolf:

I just made the design in PPT and then pasted it into Excel as an image. The harder part is in getting all your formulas correct in Excel. It's not that difficult if you have a good grasp of Excel.

Yep, I've been using it for years. Great for making flags, signs, posters, etc, etc, etc…

Thanks to jav98 for the additional ideas!

Do you have a link to download the file you mention for the Stargrunt cards ? They look fantastic !!!

One of my friends uses PPT to dungeon map when playing DnD

I use excel with the cells shrunk to a nice grid.

I often use it for campaign maps, battle reports and game aids. Very useful!

@seldonH:

Let me see if I can locate that file. It's been a while since I worked on it, and I'm not quite sure where it ended up.

I think the real point to be made is that Jav can draw, and does so very well.

Anyone with talent can use any tool to create what they need, there's nothing about PPT which is intrinsically more helpful or able than any other illustration programme, and it has some appalling restrictions too.

That said, a player in my RPG group used nothing but Word to design a bunch of futuristic medals for our home-grown Starship Troopers game, and they looked fantastic.

I've never thought of using PP as a drawing program, thanks for opening my eyes.

I also noticed Settlers of CaTron, which is wonderful.
I suggest using solar sailers as boats if you ever get to seafarers.
End of line.
