China accuses Vietnam of hyping up its disagreement over their oil rig, in the South China Sea, despite being within Vietnam's 200-mile territorial limit:

Why haven't Vietnam, the Philippines and other counter parties gotten together and proposed to rename the south China sea to something which captures the shared nature of the area? Individually they already have their own names. The argument for such a common recognition would leverage global media and undermine Chinese hegemony. It could kick start a boycott if China doesn't play ball.

Not sure if re-naming it would make much of a difference. My Chinese-language atlas labels the area '南海‘, which just means 'South Sea'.
It's a bit like the old joke about 'What do they call Chinese food in China?'

Lol! That is funny. It would just be a device to start a dialogue between concerned nations where the Chinese position is undermined implicitly.

It's also known as the West Phillipine Sea in some circles.
