I'm seriously thinking of starting 15mm Western skirmish gaming but am a bit confused by the offerings.

What do you consider the best 15mm Western figures? I see Peter Pig do a range and so do Blue Moon of figures and buildings. But those do not mix due to true 15mm v 18mm, am I correct? So I would have to choose one over the other? Or do the figures and buildings mix?

Does anyone else make 15mm western figures?

What do you guys use? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mister Tibbles,

My question to you would be why 15mm instead of 28mm? To me the larger figures seem to have more personality in a skirmish game where you have a limited number of figures on the table. I am not belittleing your choice, merely wondering. Unfortunately I only have 28mm old west figs, but the 15mm Blue Moon ones that I have seen do look nice.

Minifigs makes an Old West line. If you want to do cav vs. Indians you can add Hovels, QRF and Irregular to the mix. Essex and Old Glory make ACW cav that would also do the job.

Do you have a preference of 15mm vs. 18mm? Do you want to take advantage of the Old Glory army card? Do you want to be able to buy small 8 figure packs instead of larger 30 figure packs? I don't think you could go wrong with either, but I think PP has a more comprehensive range.

Jim, 15mm is good when space is limited. You can do a dedicated 15mm skirmish table in a quarter of the size of a 25mm one.

The Minifigs Wild West range includes some very nice figures and with the Cowboys and Cowboys on Horseback sets you can get foot and mounted versions of the same figures. The Townsfolk and Armed Civilians sets are also useful and include figures like the town drunk and a 'Man with no name' Clint Eastwood-style figure. They should be a good match for Peter Pig.

I went through the same process a while back and went with Blue Moon. They are larger than the other manufacturers but nice figures. I already had some HO scale model railroad buildings that they match perfectly.

They should be a good match for Peter Pig.

In fact I use mainly PP but some QRF and some minifigs – all mix nicely. I suspect Blue Moon, nice as they look, would be too big.

PP and QRF both do 15mm buildings. If you're in the UK/EU they'll work out cheaper than the BM buildings.

My question to you would be why 15mm instead of 28mm?

Answered in the true spirit of TMP, well done :-)

Hehe. Actually, it sounds like my wife. When I suggest A, she always seems to suggest B. It's the nature of conversation. No harm done.

I can afford to buy anything I want in the hobby, so price is no big deal. (This is a cheap hobby!) It's primarily space and time. As I've gotten older the demands of work seem to increase every year, taking away time from hobbies and family. 15mm is less demanding on me than 28mm while allowing me to remain in the hobby.

My OG Army expired a while ago, so all options are viable. I'm in the US but do order from Europe.

I've never played a Pony Wars game, but it might be interesting as well. Who doesn't like using the same figures and scenery for multiple types of games? :-)

I agree with what Morrigan said above. Once based, the 18mm ones will look better with most HO scale plastic and paper stuff out there.

Here's some paper stuff for HO scale the you could either build in card stock or, better yet, use as templates for making styrene and balsa structures.

If you're interested, the buildings I use were made by Kibri. Here's an example from ebay:

As with everything else, prices have gone up…… :(

Also GameCraft make very nice 15mm Old West buildings:

Personally, I would renew the O.G. Army Card and go with Blue Moon. Huge variety in one range.

Those GameCraft buildings look good.

One of the benifits of going with the Blue moon figures is the fact that it is compllete, has a very large range of dedicated buildings, vast figure variants, and a pony wars range that will fit in. This could save you from the endless "does this fit in with that and does that fit in with this" ouestions and searchs.

sorry for resurrection of this thread,

I do 15mm wild west and cav/indians. I went with the blue moon range and it is excellent. a buddy of mine has some peter pig figures from the modern brush wars range and is they are about the same size between ranges I would see no real issue with using them together. Game Craft has been mentioned, and they are pretty darn good.

the only real issue with blue moon is that I like mounted/dismounted pairs and you seem to have to find one "close enough" and paint them alike. I'm OCD so this might just be a me thing.
