In this exchange of letters, link is meant by the description of the Bull by Grant? |

I think he means a diary cow. They have to be bred with a bull to make milk. And little baby cows. Seventh entry here: link |

Presumably a load of bull written in his diary! |

You know that these are made-up, right? Newspapers of the day used to play the wag regularly and no official or institution was safe when a reporter or editor set his sights on them. The entire exchange is most likely a satire of Judson Kilpatrick's whining to someone about not being taken seriously. In other words, Kilpatrick, in the paper's eyes, needs to man up. |

TKindred – absolutely correct. A careful reading of the letters reveals a vast number of "in jokes." My favorite is from B.F.B. about borrowing Forrest's spoons. Note the "letters" are from a Memphis newspaper. 'Nuff said. |
