I'm in the process of expanding my meager building collection for Post D-Day Western Front skirmish games. I then realized that my few buildings are models of intact buildings and that I tend to be drawn to intact buildings instead of ruins and bombed out buildings. I'm not sure why. Perhaps there is something disturbing my subconscious about ruined buildings? I don't know. For some reason I keep thinking that real photos taken in France after D-Day feature mostly bombed out towns, while classic WWII movies seemed to rarely have ruins. Is that right? I'm just curious if WWII gamers, regardless of miniature size, have a preference for intact buildings or ruined buildings or a mixture of both? What do you all see more of on game tables at cons and homes? |

Ruins that fit inside intact buildings |

I prefer ruins myself, but I'm mostly interested in buildings as a simple variation on the linear obstacle theme. Because, when I was gaming, I was never satisfied with the potential ability of OTS rule sets to cope with combat inside of, or from (particularly) multi-storey structures. I found that ruins were usually a little more cosmetically tolerant of rough storage and transport conditions as well. Always liked the idea of ruins inside of intact structures, but never really looked into it. Duck |

I like ruins, but prefer to actually live in an intact structure. |

I like to have a mix of both on the table. I use a lot of resin buildings but I often make a ruined version from card in case I need a "before and after " set. Ruins are easier to fight in and as you say most battlefield images show a lot of damaged buildings. |

Both! Ruins are just easier to deal with game-wise. |

I find Ruins to be more useful. However, I really like when there is an intact structure and a matching ruin. Allowing one to swap out for the ruin as the battle progresses. |

Miniature Building Authority makes them as intact, but they come apart into ruins. |

Intact. My scenarios do not involve much artillery. |

Used to be intact for me as the buildings were just for guys to move round or hide. However after building that warlord ruins set I have been converted and use some sort of ruins for every WW2 skirmish now. Still prefer intact for FOW though. |

Depends. Desert/Adobe buildings? Mostly intact. Stalingrad? Were there *any* buildings still intact there? France? Mix of destroyed and intact, especially as you get close to the German border. Village of Singsing was part of the Maginot line, so a significant number of buildings had 3ft thick reinforced concrete walls! |

I always have wondered about when all those bombed out building photos where taken. Most seem to be after the fight is over. Did the prep smash them all, or is oit a progressive thing where some would start the fight more or less intact and run down as it went on? Owen |

Intact and ruins of the same buildings would be nice. I don't know why I didn't think of it! Looking at the Mark IV site last night, I see they do this. I might pick up a few for variety. I use Paper Terrain for my ACW games, but for WWII I like using resin for whatever reason. I always have wondered about when all those bombed out building photos where taken. Most seem to be after the fight is over. Did the prep smash them all, or is oit a progressive thing where some would start the fight more or less intact and run down as it went on? I wonder as well. |

If you visit Valiant Miniatures website in the gallery you can see the Rapid ruin master. its a plastic kit that can start as a complete building and converts to a ruin. It is currently at the tool trial stage and will be on sale shortly. We have other kits modelled and will ready for tooling in the coming months. |
