But now at a lower price of $11,999.95 USD… still with free shipping. I know he needs the cash but he might have better luck with a more than a $.05 USD price reduction.

That's still more than all of my savings accounts combined. Perhaps he would do better by selling it in parcels, and make more money that way than by hoping someone with that much money to spare in one purchase…

Just $3 USDK less than my car when i bought it in 2009. I agree with rebelyell2006. He would have better luck with smaller parcels. Even at $1 USDK each per parcel, folks would more likely buy.

Reading into the text of the ebay sale gives a clue as to why he is doing that way; i.e. He is 80, he is selling up his lifetime collection before he passes on and also is looking to support his wife's medical costs. I wish him luck. Given less pressing needs I think selling it in chinks is the way ahead, but needs must …

He would be lucky if he were to sell it for half that price. It's fortunate for him that the pictures are at a distance and emphasize the scenery rather than the paint jobs on the miniatures!

Selling the lot may actually be the best bet. That is a big chunk of nostalgia on the table. Confederettes? Duke's old demo set? Old school stuff from happy days. I will be very surprised if he gets that asking price, though I wish him all success.

I'm not sure the gamers that could afford his price would be looking on eBay for this in the first place.

donlowry17 Jun 2014 9:20 a.m. PST

In addition to the selling price, I'd have to shell out for adding a new room to the house. Other than that …

I am sure he doesn't have the time or the will to parcel it out. Speaking from experience of doling out large lots into smaller ones seldom was worth effort to me.
I would suggest bringing it to Historicon and setting it out in his own flea market and let people come up and buy pieces of the collection.
Great guy hope it sells.

…as the Devil drives. Options are severely limited for such a large collection, especially because the 15mm are true fifteens. Dropping the price a nickel seems fairly cynical, especially when one is marketing to a group always looking for a smoking deal. firetruck

He has been very successful in the past few years at selling large collections. I do not think he has sold any on eBay though.

I don't think it is cynical. It is simply a sales tactic. This is why we will readily buy something for a $1.99 USD over $2.00 USD every time. He dropped the price a nickel so you will see $11 USDK instead of $12 USDK. It's still a nickel but to the subconscious, it is significant. Marketing at its finest.

Sorry to hear about the medical problems of Duke and his wife!

For any who don't know, his line of figures was very nicely sculpted. I used to sell them. And I have quite a few of his similar Napoleonics figures still. (My ACW figures are even older Scruby figures.)

Seriously, if I had room for these figures, I'd be very tempted to buy them.

jpipes18 Jun 2014 4:43 p.m. PST

One interesting thing about the sale is the post says the figures are expertly painted. From the photos I can see they look fine but I wouldn't call them expertly by any measure. With 2500 average table top figs I personally would be hard pressed to ask $2,000 USD for the figures. Add in all the terrain and of course you get more value, but I don't see another $10,000 USD there. I would think one would be lucky to get $4,500 USD for the entire collection on a good day. That's not me being snarky either but based on my experience buying and selling figures and collections for many years.

It must be an awful wrench for the poor fellow to sell these. A lifetime of memories.

uglyfatbloke19 Jun 2014 2:49 a.m. PST

Makes me wonder about how we will go about selling our rafts of 28mm ACW stuff when the time comes that we no longer have room – or the ability to move 1000s of figures and dozens of buildings around due to advancing age! Probably not ebay; there's a guy been trying to sell a fabulous 'Pony Wars' collection for ages and ages. The price is n't unreasonable but I don't think many people who might want to buy such a thing would look on ebay in the first place.

jpipes19 Jun 2014 6:43 a.m. PST

Hmm, do you have a link? I can't find a pony wars lot on ebay anywhere…

uglyfatbloke22 Jun 2014 2:54 a.m. PST

Can't recall offhand, but you might try 'wargame terrain' or maybe 'old west 28mm?' Last I saw it the vendor had split the collection into two lots – the figures (which are very cool) and the terrain which is very extensive as well as being fab.
Don't suppose you're interested in a massive ACW collection while you're about it?

jpipes22 Jun 2014 5:54 a.m. PST

Sure ACW is my main area. Contact me offline.

uglyfatbloke23 Jun 2014 3:42 a.m. PST

Not sure how to do that I'm afraid, but you can reach me at…. thathistoryblokeATbtinternet.com …just substitute the usual '@' sign for AT. Sadly we are soon going to lose the venue we use for our 'big' games and – tragically – we just don't have space in our house to put a 30-foot table together.

uglyfatbloke24 Jun 2014 10:16 a.m. PST

jpipes…Try 'Old West pony wars 28mm' on ebay; the terrain and the figures are linked by going to 'see sellers other items'.
You should be able to PM me via this site now; I shall try and reach you that way, but I've been having a bit of a struggle with the site.
