I don't know if it is deliberate or not, but Danaerys T, first of Her Name, is a VERY annoying character when she is ruling.
I can't stand her smug "Let the peasants come to me and I shall rule wisely" smirk. It is really refreshing to see that nation building is not as easy as she thought.
There is a temptation to match this with our current Real World, but I shall refrain.
Is there a metaphor here? grin

She could have made parking lots of many obnoxious cities and moved on. In fact, there is historical precedent here. Have the heirs of Harren made trouble lately? Harrenhall is nothing now but a strategically placed ruin that dragons nuked.

I confess that I have never like Dany, in the books or on the show. She has passed from abused child to arrogant emotional know it all conqueror without taking a breath. She is totally emotional and thinks she is doing Good, which is scary. In fact, I have an eerie feeling that she will be a vicious self righteous conqueror in future books, making Stannis look like Mervin the Kindly. A "True Targaryean", in other words.

She is 14. Add dragons and a crown = ?

Tango0116 Jun 2014 12:08 p.m. PST

Question: The twin dragons are dead?
How they survive there?

Who needs horese when you have dragons?

John the OFM16 Jun 2014 12:23 p.m. PST

The red and green dragons are chained up in a dungeon. The black one is flying free.
Both situations haunt Book 5.
The WMD are unstable. grin

Yes, I'd say there's a metaphor there.

Thanks John, I think she leave them to dead.

When the 5th book came out I re-read the first 4 books. I skipped all of her chapters. I didn't feel like I missed anything.

I don't think her "smirk" is one that is showing how she loves to rule, and how easy she thinks it is. Her smirk is fake, she is doing it for her subjects. How would you feel sitting in a stone chair all day? But you have to ask yourself which is worse: feeling uncomfortable, or appearing weak. It is part of why Aegon the Conqueror built the Iron Throne out of the swords of the vanquished, because he said something like "A King should never sit easy." I think Dany realizes this, and is showing to her people that she is strong. Is it easy to rule? Of course not, otherwise we would have obnoxious amounts of kingdoms. And she sets an example when she crucifies the 163-or so Masters. Then she attempts to rule as best as she can. Aegon the Conqueror did something similar, when he unleashed Balerion, Veaghar, and Meraxes on the Field of Fire. Then he accepts the Lannisters, who had stood against him on the field, into his kingdom. Ruling ins't about destroying everything in your path, but rather knowing when to destroy and when to reach out for fealty. I think that all of her Slaver's Bay work is for naught, eventually, and she will set sail for Westeros, and will take the Iron Throne and be a much wiser and much more capable Queen/Khaleesi than the one she may appear to be now. As soon as (IF) she tames those dragons, nothing will stand in her way.

I never liked her.

I think Bran will worg the black dragon.

John the OFM16 Jun 2014 7:43 p.m. PST

I don't think so. It will be Jon Targaryean.

I also don't think Dany will save Westeros from the white walkers. SOMEONE will eventually use the dragons against them, I think, but GRRM is being coy about which person will in the end.

Tango0116 Jun 2014 11:37 p.m. PST

The confusion became when Bran was said that he would fly.
Maybe at the back of his brother Jon?

I think that a good epilogue to the end of the books would be a short scene in which some nobles plot against the "mad king" who is descended from Daenerys (who is described as having become a tyrant in her old age. ) When faced by the question of dealing with the dragons, a white walker cultist steps from the shadows and offers "technical assistance".

Ms. Clarke is struggling a bit with the Dany role.

In the books we learn the pit falls of having a 14 year old "princess" ruler. Needs on the job training. But she is a smart girl and does learn.

Funny, she is one of my favorite characters in the show. I have no idea how her characters plays in the books, however.

Mithmee17 Jun 2014 2:44 p.m. PST

Well yes she has her three Dragons and her Slave army.

But once Bran gets within range of one of those Dragons it will be his.

Then he and her will Unite the rest of the country and fight the real enemy.

The Undead Zombies & Wights from up North.

Bran has no Targaryean blood.
Neither did Quentyn Martel (Book 5) and was made into a Crispy Prince.

For anyone to ride a dragon, they must have Targaryean blood. Go to the conspiracy site for a long list of those with alleged Targ blood.

That includes, in declining order of probability Jon Snow, Tyrion, Jaime and Cersei (!) down to Varys being an alleged Blackfyre.

Thomas Thomas19 Jun 2014 9:36 a.m. PST

She is a very interesting character in books as well. Just currently stuggling with the realities of ruling over a city of freed slaves and unrepentent ex-slavers.

From reading the excerts from the new history of Westeros in Dangerous Women (and soon) Rogues, it does not seem necessary to have Targaryean blood to bond with a Dragon. (Though its hard to tell if somewhere – way back – characters may have had Targaryean blood).

Perhaps Mitochondrial Eve was Targaryen?

Mithmee20 Jun 2014 12:46 p.m. PST

Bran has no Targaryean blood.

True but he has an ability.

Oh and he will not ride the Dragon he will control and be the Dragon.

Ivan DBA22 Jun 2014 10:45 a.m. PST

Dragons are probably resistant or even immune from wargs' powers. If you read between the lines in the first or second book, dragons are probably from another planet, and thus will have such alien minds that a warg will be unable to control them.

Also, and alternatively, wargs can't normally possess intelligent beings, on which I'll say no more. Hodor is the rare human that can be possessed because he is so simple. I'm guessing that dragons are likewise too intelligent to possess.
