Nice looking fleet!

Almost a match for my Bretonnians!

Well done comrade gold star for you

Great fleet but I was taken aback by the green flight decks. Where did you find that scheme?

Al

PS I am curious because you have obviously found some references that I would like to use too. My soviet fleet awaits paint.

Thanks for the compliments… I think there are better painted ships out there, but yes, I am happy with myself with these guys :)

You can find photos of green flight decks on some classes…. and what I have seen is that this changes over time. I can't say "when" and "where" each color was used, it seems inconsistent, but here are some photos to look at…

Leningrad, part of the Moskva class (differs from the Moskva visually as the deck is painted with 5 landing circles instead of 4)…

Slava…

(this I suppose is Russian, not Soviet)

Here is the Kalinin (a Kirov class, but the ones I painted were the Kirov and the Frunze)… you'll have to scroll down and look on the right for a close up of the Kalinin helo deck….

Anyway, I am no expert, and the paint is different from ship to ship in the same class, but I think there is enough photo documentation to warrant the inclusion of green flight decks on some ships of some classes. There there are at least 3 different orange-bown-red tones, plus greys, for the decks. I chose to mix my stuff up a bit…. using the same paints, these ships all look like they belong together, but with a little personality for the larger ships. The smaller ships I did less variation as there was less to work with. The subs, I chose to paint some white outlines and some red and white markings where appropriate as the "all black" is just kind of boring.

Yep, I found the same when I started researching mine. The green decks may be a faded black or similar, but they are definitely there in photographic evidence.

And Khusrau's choice to name a Typhoon as Red October …

… was my inspiration to do the same :) I am working on a 1:3000th Sean Connery to go with mine, but I am having trouble with the eyebrows.

Thanks Chalfant. I had never seen those pictures. Now I have to get off my duff and start painting green flight decks.

Most classes seem to use a version of that red-brown for the helo deck, but the few with green really stand out, I think they look pretty sharp that way.

I'd pick out the carriers (Kievs for sure, and the Moskvas, but not the Kuznetsov)as shown, but be sparing for anything else, just a couple widely scattered.

And take pictures when they are done :)
