For me that would be the AWI. I just cant do it due to the lack of flag info on the American side. Cant do a musket era army without flags for the units, even if most of the units didn't bother with flags.

The other reason is painting all those irregular militia. I have no problem painting hundreds and hundreds of ancients in different colors, but militia for some reason just make me want to curl up in a ball and cry in frustration.

So does anyone else have a period they really want to do, but cant for some silly reason

Most of the periods I want to get into but can't are due to lack of sufficient funds. A stupid reason I know.

The trick with the AWI is to paint all the regulars first. Once you are half blind from that the militia are a relief.

I mistakenly read Nicco Machaveli's "History of Florence" while overseas and away from home. My lists were too expansive and terrain for tangled skirmishing really suffered from delusions of grandure! ;) I still like the idea of assasins, church soldiers, mobs, and more ruffles and hosery, banners, swords, and cod pieces in shocking chroma. But the castles, cannals, bridges, and Roman ruin plans would be only a little more forever than painting the factions!
I'd like to do AWI as well as WSS, but I promised my wife that WW2, FIW,and Western would be it. I already have Penninsular War, ACW, and SciFi which get periodical reinforcements. Most of my collection is 28mm with some 6mm and nautical/air/space ship gaming. She has allowed me to go 15mm in scifi and 40mm in ACW, so it's not like I have naught to do! ;)

For me it's Ancients. Why? I don't like men without trousers. All those nude male legs just bother me.

Dr Mathias Fezian15 Jun 2014 6:51 p.m. PST

For me it is samurai. I'd love to have huge armies of samurai… Problem is I get suckered into painting them for other people and get burned out on them :(

The main reason I have for not starting new periods is no time, no money, too much unpainted lead for a variety of periods that I started and haven't played a game for yet.

I would like to do samurai (skirmish) in 28mm, but I already do it in 42mm.

Jacobite Highlanders. I have tons of them, but just van't finish them. It's not the tartan, it's just that so many other things keep pushing them to the back burner.

Second American Civil War in 1/72. No way to store period vehicles in the craft boxes I prefer for model storage. The $1.99 USD craft box from hobby lobby.

I find myself in the same boat as John the OFM (wonder how that would work out?)and have a slooooooow burn '45 project that hasn't even really got started. I'm keen on it and enthusiastic but other periods tend to get in the way. One day……

@Battle Flox – do ancients who wore trousers! Germans, Gauls, Brits, Dacians. Or, if you want to go east, various periods of Persians, if you like pyjamas, that is, for the earlier ones. Also loads of horse archers. But then you'd have to paint loads of horses…

The Crimean War. I'm afraid I will ruin my enjoyment of the history books I read about it if I game it. And yet I game other periods that I enjoy reading about …

CATenWolde16 Jun 2014 3:48 a.m. PST

Ancients in general, because it's too close to my "real" job.

There are any number of periods I can't do because I lack the time and money. I can't think of worse reasons than those.

What's that, CATenWolde looking after old people? 8_D

VSF, specifically IHMN and LAM figs.

Why not? No time, combined with an already large unpainted backlog.

Crimean but for me it IS the tartan. I'd love to do a "Forward the Forty Twa" style game, but by the GODS the tartan?! The sheer volume of damned tartan! No thanks.

CATenWolde17 Jun 2014 10:47 a.m. PST

@Zargon – not too old … typically around 5-6000 years, but they don't look a day over 2,000, honest! Luckily, I usually get to just rummage around in their homes when they're not around.

ubercommando17 Jun 2014 3:22 p.m. PST

Seven Years War. I can't find anyone else who'll play. "It's just all straight lines, where's the appeal in that?" is the usual response I get.
