These look great!!!!!!! Mike Adams |
Cyrus the Great | 15 Jun 2014 8:46 a.m. PST |
The release of these sets should be a game changer. |
Doms Decals | 15 Jun 2014 9:22 a.m. PST |
I really must paint my excessive pile of your Greek boxes first. Yeah, like that's gonna stop me
. ;-) |
kallman | 15 Jun 2014 9:50 a.m. PST |
My son saw these and had bought a plastic Warlord starter army of EIR but all along what he really wanted to collect was a Republican force. He is looking forward to these. Wonderful looking figures. I suppose I will have to get the Carthaginians when they are released. I agree with Cyrus that these are going to be a game changer. Oh and Dom, go ahead and get those Greeks done as they can be Carthaginian Mercenaries for the First Punic War. |

Costanzo1 | 15 Jun 2014 2:24 p.m. PST |
Looking at these nice pieces I answer myself how great is Aventine mistake in not having completed armies of early Republican Roman period!! |
jakethedog | 15 Jun 2014 2:40 p.m. PST |
I wonder if anyone is going to be insane enough to make plastic carthage elephants
|
Mithridates | 15 Jun 2014 3:34 p.m. PST |
Great looking releases, I can see those Italians being recruited as Hannibal's Bruttians. May need to add different shields for variety (hoplons and thureos). Be good to have quality plastic Gauls (my vote), especially armoured ones that could be used as Celtiberians to add some punch to Hannibal's Spanish forces. Hopefully the Spanish will have options for both scutarii and caetrati. Are cavalry and mounted command figures on the cards? Garry |

They will be on my shopping list!! Mike B |
Mars Ultor | 17 Jun 2014 6:12 a.m. PST |
Can't give more positive feedback than what's been given already. I'M totally blown away. I'm going to at least make a 7th "legion" for my allied legion. Ditto the comments/questions by Mithridates. Keep up the great work!! |
Das Sheep | 17 Jun 2014 3:20 p.m. PST |
These look amazing. I love the look of Republican Romans. I guess I am finally going to game Rome in a scale bigger than 10mm. The various totems for the cohorts is awesome. I can see at least ten boxes of legions and four of allies in my future. With LBMS transfers my army might even look nice when I am done :D With sets I and II you can make a really nice cohort. I am thinking 2 units of Hastati , 2 of Principesand 1 of Triarii at 32 men each for a cohort, with attached skirmishers, for Hail Caesar. Two legionary Cohorts, One Allied Cohort and a unit of Allied Calv and Roman Calv respectively would make for a beautiful looking little army. Anyone have suggestions for plastic early republican Calvary? |
LEGION 1950 | 17 Jun 2014 4:32 p.m. PST |
I think it would be great to have cavalry!!!!! Mike Adams |
Mars Ultor | 17 Jun 2014 10:15 p.m. PST |
Herr Sheep, Until Agema and now Victrix, I have seen nothing in the way of plastic Republican Roman infantry in 28mm, nevermind the cav to go with them. Until Victrix puts out cav for these ancient lines (and they have not yet committed to a date for that), it seems you only have metal options. The best (IMO) is Aventine. I have a unit of them and they're great. So are Foundry and Gripping Beast, but they're expensive. Next scale down is Crusader, but, as they cost close to Aventine, why not just get the real thing? Old Glory is cheap and I can't truly judge their quality (but they don't look too good based on the pics). As for the army composition, theoretically Rome had 50% Roman/Latins and 50% subjugated allies. But a number of battle accounts tell of more like 1/3 Roman/Latin and 2/3 Allied (e.g., Battle of Sentinum 295 BC) |
Wayniac | 18 Jun 2014 6:19 a.m. PST |
Those look great! I'm excited that they seem to be doing a Punic Wars set for 28mm; my brother and I have talked of doing a small historical matchup with him as Rome and me as Carthage, but it's on hold for a bit. It would be great to be able to do it with 28mm versus 15mm :D |
oldbob | 18 Jun 2014 7:22 a.m. PST |
These are beautiful figures, but I don't think I have another Republican Roman army in my brushes! Boy they do look great. |
ScottS | 18 Jun 2014 7:43 a.m. PST |
Aw, crap. I may end up spending way too much money on these. |
Das Sheep | 18 Jun 2014 8:12 a.m. PST |
Would allied legions have employed archers with their skirmishers during this period? |
Tarantella | 18 Jun 2014 9:18 a.m. PST |
These would do as well equipped Samnites in their own right? |
Mars Ultor | 18 Jun 2014 11:24 a.m. PST |
@Tarantella: I think so. Maybe the Samnites had a slightly different shield on average, maybe not. It's quite possible that many had a scutum and some didn't. But they look dead on to me. @ Herr Sheep: Short answer: no. Long Answer: There is some long-ranged missile fire going on in Italy but not a whole lot until the time of the Punic Wars (when Rome is fighting outside of Italy – after 265BC)when archers and slingers are hired. But this does not have anything much to do with their Allies, from whom they demanded the normal troop types as the Allies' obligation for service. We do know that slingers were used by the Romans way early on, even as far back as their siege of the nearby Etruscan city of Veii back in 396 BC; but in what numbers and who they were I don't think is clear (poorer citizens probably?). And the Romans probably made more use of them than is usually mentioned. But the majority of missile fire prior to the Punic Wars seems to have been from javelins and throwing spears, which is why the scutum was employed more as a body shield vs. the clipeus/hoplon (I believe that to be the case – someone can fact-check that). So most army lists for the period will not even make a distinction between Roman/Latin and Allied hastati, principes, etc. and you will usually see separate unit listings for slingers and archers when you can get them as more support units vs. core units. |

Riquende | 27 Jun 2014 4:55 a.m. PST |
Really nice set. I'm already invested in Early Imps, but there might be some conversion potential in there somewhere. Any updates on the Greek skirmisher sprues being made available separately? |

We need elephants! A box with sprues of two different kinds of elephant with the option of howdah or bareback. Two piece men with a common lower half and a top half allowing them to be Successors or Punics or Indians. That would be wonderful – and would sell and sell |
