There was a time when cheap cans of flat spray paint in colours useful to this hobby could be had from a number of retail chains here. Now black and white seem to be the only colours still readily available.

Does anyone know of a source for them that I've missed, or am I left with no option but to pay through the nose for hobby branded products?

I get my undercoats form Supa-Cheap. I use the $2 USD-3 cans and usually buy them in bulk when there is a sale.
I know that I can also get the $2 USD-3 cans in yellow/ochre colour from Supa Cheap, its a good base coat for light tan coloured stuff ( German vehicles ) ,,,,,, there is also a flat grey undercoat , everything else in the range is definitely gloss and stays gloss seven after a dullcoat of flat clear spray over the top
cheers Tom

I'm afraid that 'Australia' and 'cheap' don't really seem to go together these days – and unfortunately spray paints are not something you can get on-line from the US or UK…

I console myself by getting mine from my FLGS – at least I'm supporting my gaming venue whilst paying yet another tax on money I've already paid tax on whilst earning it in the first place…

I tried that outlet Tom, but didn't see any flats other than black and white. Maybe I should go back and ask.

Is the grey undercoat designed to work as a filler as well? If so, it wouldn't be suitable for figures.

in Australia cheap spray is invariably bad spray.

I use the EXPORT brand, its about $2 USD-3 a can . I know for sure they do flat black , flat white , flat yellow ochre and a flat red oxide and flat grey primer .
I haven't had a problem using any of them.
The grey isn't a filler as far as I know , I just checked all of the cans and it doesn't say anything about being a filler

cheers Tom

I've never had a coverage problem with the cheap cans of flat black spray paint I use Cardinal, although I have to admit that since buying in bulk from K-Mart in the days when that company still sold paint I haven't needed to buy another. Perhaps the Cheap As Chips and car paints that are the only ones on the market these days aren't of the same standard, although thabear suggests otherwise.

The only issue I have experienced is the usual nozzle failure leaving half a can unusable. Still, even then they worked out far cheaper than any specialist hobby brand.

I'll give Supa-Cheap another try, thabear.

Hmmm I've never had a can of the various EXPORT colours give up on me halfway through either , I reckon I've always got my $2 USD-3 out of each one.
The clear I use is a Wattyl Clear Estapol flat finish , its about $8 USD a can and it works fine for me although about 1-2 days to dry completely , while drying it leaves a waxy feel to the figures , now this stuff I do have a problem with the can jamming up inside, not the nozzle , the can itself.
So when I use it I make sure I spray clear as many figures as possible , sometimes ill also do all of my trees as well just to be sure I use as much as possible before the can jams up . Allot of people say the Estapol is bad and it yellows colours over 10-20 years , but i'll be dead by then so who cares , cheers Tom

Going back some years I used Estapol, and I found to my consternation that it does indeed yellow over time.

Can you also predict the X-Lotto numbers? Just asking.
