Thought this might be useful to modern US gamers
Aircraft carriers are generally named for past U.S. Presidents. Of the last 14, 10 were named for past U.S. Presidents, and 2 for Members of Congress

Incorrect and out of date, as CVN80 is going to be Enterprise. I should mention that some of the historic carrier names have been given to helicopter assault ships (aka baby flat-tops). |

If you aint dead, then you shouldn't get anything named after you. Really dislike naming buildings or anything else after the living. |

Correct me if I am wrong (someone will); I am under the impression that no ship is named after Ernest Evans. |

DE-1023 was named for him (a Brooke class DE IIRC?) but it decommissioned and the name has not been recycled. |

Political correctioness rules!!!!! Now, I do think that naming ships after politicians to curry favour with differing political factions and therefore trading honours for influence is, if not exactly corrupt, certainly not healthy for a democracy. I have though been racking my brains trying to think of the link between this practice and the term 'political correctness'. For the life of me I just can't see any link. So could you expand on this? How is naming a carrier the Ronald Reagan or George W Bush 'politically correct'? As I am at a complete loss

If you aint dead, then you shouldn't get anything named after you. Really dislike naming buildings or anything else after the living. Why? We commemorate the living in lots of other ways, what is so execrable about this one? Not that I wouldn't alter US ship naming conventions, if I could. -Kle. |

Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I feel that the names of our ships should honor our fallen, commemorate our past, reinforce our traditions and celebrate our country. Rickover's famous "fish don't vote" quote caused an upheaval in how we name ships and uprooted decades of tradition in order to curry votes and funding. Was he right? I have no idea. But, I miss being able to look at a ship's name and know what type it was. <sigh>. Regards, Scott Chisholm |

Incorrect and out of date, as CVN80 is going to be Enterprise. How so? The document specifically addresses CVN 80 being named Enterprise, and says why this was done, and why it is unusual. USS Nimitz is also explained in the document. |

Name them for cities, states, regions, concepts, Medal of Honor or other medal recipients, or any of the 'traditional' names we've had for the past 240-odd years. Fish are acceptable as well. |

To my mind the most outlandish example of a break from tradition is naming LCS-10 for former Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Not a war hero. Not associated with the Department of the Navy. Why? She is a crime victim. Hardly the stuff to inspire a sailor to go in harm's way. This is who you name a Warship after. link Of course it is an LCS, so whatever

That In THE most ridiculous choice of naming a U.S. warship ever. If they are going to start naming warships after victims of crime (which is the dumbest thing EVAH – other than the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle and the LCS
), have a national lottery so that everyone gets a fair chance. |

GM3 Carr is a great inspiration. If you've not read Last Stand of the Tincan Sailors, it's well worth it. I was actually having a good day until y'all reminded me about a ship being named after Giffords. At least she lived, with is more than the gentleman who was shot with her can say. To think of all the young Sailors and Marines who die every year on active duty after whom a ship could be named
