I'm looking into painting a division of USCT black troops in 15mm scale and noticed that few manufacturers offer such figures. In fact, the only one I can find is Stone Mountain Miniatures here in the USA. Anyone know of others? I'm also interested in your opinion. Would you consider it worthwhile to purchase figures scuplted as 'black soldiers,' or would you just paint standard (a.k.a. white) figures as black? |

At that scale absolutely not, even if you paint them up as black, very few people will notice much of a difference at 15mm unless you point it out to them. |

The only ones I could see that would be "noticeable" are the ones with no head gear. From the add that was shown I had to look a bit before I even noticed that. Perhaps the one with the floppy hat is a different uniform too, did any white Union troops wear them? (my Civil War uniform knowledge is limited) |

FWIW the Stone Mountain figures are nice |

As well as Musket Miniatures ones. Both compatible as they were designed by the same person. |

I did a brigade worth of the Stone Mountain ones. I like them. link
Don't forget – many "White" figures have beards, mustaches and long, flowy hair you'd have to carve off. |

For anyone who is interested (maybe especially British ACW gamers), Peter Pig also offers 2 packs of black troops in their 15mm ACW line. |

@Flashman14: nice job with painting black troops. You have definitely given me inspiration for my project. With reference to the units you have created, the celebrated 54th Massachusetts was indeed recruited as a 'black regiment.' Because there were so many volunteers when this unit was created in 1863, the surplus men were diverted into a second black regiment authorized by Governor Andrew, designated as the 55th Massachusetts. The 56th Massachusetts was not a black regiment. Rather, it was one of four regiments that were recruited mostly from veterans who had returned to Massachusetts after their enlistments were up. |
