…Russian Bear H Bombers 50 Miles Off The California Coast.

"U.S. F-22, F-15 jets intercept four Bear H bombers near Alaska, Northern California

Four Russian strategic bombers triggered U.S. air defense systems while conducting practice bombing runs near Alaska this week, with two of the Tu-95 Bear H aircraft coming within 50 miles of the California coast, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) confirmed Wednesday.

"The last time we saw anything similar was two years ago on the Fourth of July," Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Norad spokesman, told the Free Beacon.

Davis said the latest Bear H incursions began Monday around 4:30 p.m. Pacific time when radar detected the four turbo-prop powered bombers approaching the U.S. air defense zone near the far western Aleutian Islands…"

That can't be the right picture,. That is a Tu-95RTs Bear-D ELINT and maritime surveillance / targetting version (notice the antenna pods on either side of the rear fuselage and on the tip of the horizontal stabilizers) which has long been retired. VVS now only has the Tu-95MS Bear-H cruise missile carrier, plus the Tu-142 ASW version.

WOO-HOO!!!! It's got a nice big RED STAR on the wing!!! Do they still use that, or did they ever get around to not repainting these things?

Makes me recall a famous Naval quotation:

Junior Officer of the Deck (looking out of the periscope): "Why does that P-3 have a red star on it?"

Officer of the Deck (realizing the JOOD doesn't know what a Russian IL-38 MAY looks like): "Down scope!"

Hilarious mirth and ship handling follows . . .

Murph,

Yes, they still carry red stars. Some recently commented that they were meant to have been painted out, but the RAF keeps taking photos of them with big red stars, same as always.

Mako, how come you aren't pushing for the Russian recce aircraft to carry missiles so they can shoot down the American interceptors?

If it's good enough for the goose, it's good enough for the gander. :P

Still none in metal, I guess I should have said.

I really don't want any of the printed, plastic material, due to all negative the issues with it.

Because I'm a red-blooded, yank Thomas, and not a Russkie.
