I've started working on some buildings to use for SAGA games. I'm not 100% stuck on historical accuracy, but want something with an appropriate feel. I am using foam core board for the basic structure. I will cover it with balsa for the wooden walls. link link I'm not sure if I should do a thatch roof or a grass roof. A quick search of the googles shows lots of grass roofs. Your input would be appreciated. Sean |

My 2peneth would be to suggest that you don't make them too perfect. Let them look a little ramshackle. |

Good point. I will try to make it look lived in. |

It depends where your buildings are supposed to be, but I would think thatched roofs would be your best bet. Probably the most common type of roofing material of the era. |

The roofing varies widely with region. Turf roofs were popular in many areas of scandinavia, as were thatch. Turf is heavy, so you probably don't want plank walls. (Also a rather flat roof.) Log or stone houses can have turf roofs. Also note that turf roofs often reach all the way to the ground. (Stone was popular on Iceland. Not many forests around.) Wooden shingles is another nice, and often overlooked, material. The house you've started there looks to me like it would have thatch or shingles, not turf. |

If i do turf I would just run the roof to the ground and add a little extra wall so it goes all the way out. I think I will do at least one turfed roof to have some variety. One problem with turf is how to make the interior accessible. That shouldn't be too hard to figure out though. |

If you go for thatch, there are some nice tutorials on the net. My faves use either terry towl or faux fur. |

I used dish cloth for Vietnam huts and teddy bear fur for a Viking house. Your DBA army looks pretty nice. Who makes that elephant? |

@Soldat I am not sure who made the elephant. I picked up the army as a bundle at Recruits in Lee Summit, MO. Thanks for the compliment. I plan to post some picks of the army on here when I get it based. |

looks good as is. Do you have the dimensions of the building? |

This building is 6" x 8". It is actually a little big. I will call it the town meeting hall. My others will be around 5x6 or smaller. I did get the building primed and will start dry brushing. Keep an eye out for the update on my blog. gamingandshooting.blogspot.com |
