So Elting has the 4th Hussars in light green jackets and the 5th in darker, hunter green jackets.

Osprey has both the 4th & 5th Hussars in darker, hunter green jackets.

Those are the two convenient sources I've got handy. Anyone have any clarification they can share? I'm leaning towards following Elting.

Cheers,

Col Elting, and thus Knotel, everytime. The latter took especial care with German subjects…

Rawkins gives the 4th as Mid Green and the 5th as Dark Green. Enrico Acerbi on the Napoleon Series gives them as Parrot Green and Dark Green respectively: link as does Digby Smith in 'Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars'.

What time period – early Napoleonic Wars, late -or French Revolutionary Wars???

Given the quality of the dyes available at the time, could it be that the jackets may have faded as a result of campaign?

That is a definite possibility. Sometimes the uniforms were dyed a darker shade than 'regulation' and they would generally fade to the correct color.

von Winterfeldt,

The plates I am comparing are all labeled:

Osprey 4th Hussars – 1805 – dark green
Osprey 5th Hussars – 1805 – dark green

Elting 4th Hussars – 1812 – light green
Elting 5th Hussars – 1808 – dark green

Per Osprey's plate the only difference between the 4th & 5th Hussars is the color of their shako (blue, 4th and red, 5th).

Thus my question started with, "are these two units really uniformed the same?" and evolved into asking if the colors were correct.

EDIT: I should also mention the text of the Osprey has them down as different colors, one being 'parrot green' and one being 'dark green'. So I am guessing the plate is a mistake.

Cheers,

The Bandit

Bandit

I checked the Ranglisten of 1806

4th hussars

lightblue shako – paperlgrüne dolman and pelisse
ponceau (poppy) red tousers

5th hussars
Crapprothe shako (madder red) – darkgreen dolman and pelisse – crimson trousers

I would translate paperlgrün as a light green shade, so different green colours for each outfit.
