If painted properly, do you think the Games Workshop Bretonnian archers would work well for the War of the Roses.

I picked up a large amount of these at a convention sometime ago. They are easy to paint and I can make the liveries match by unit.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I assume that we are talking about 2 plastic archers they came out with in the 90's, right?

Longbowmen drew to the ear. Helmet with the rim would interfere with that. War helmet was not popular with bowmen because of that. Cut the right side of the helmet's rim to make it historical.

Other than that I see no reason why you can't use them for WotR.

If we are speaking of those plastic archers released in 1996, then I would personally consider them better suited for a bit earlier period. They would look pretty decent in 14th century, but by the time of WotR their style of dress would start appearing a little outdated.

You've got them, use them.

I think they work well for hundred years war…. and might as a push look ok as wotr… I always assume that some of the provincial troops are thirty or more years behind current fashion.

Would head swaps improve their historical use?

The Brettonians were basically a blend of 100YW French (cavalry) and English (foot). I'd say the archers would be fine for WOTR as well.

And the 1990s Empire troopps were vitrually all usable as historical – a lot of the foot could easily pass for Swiss or Germans.

They're much better suited to HYW, but I use 'em happily for WotR… with one major caveat.

The average WotR archer would be somewhat better-armoured than the figures appear to be.
I simply assume that these guys are wearing a jack-of-plates or haubergeon under their livery.

If you're happy enough with that, nothing else about the figures says 'no'.

(I am working my way through their ranks adding sword-&-buckler to their belts, though!)

I agree, those figs are too early for WOTR.

In a word no. They were designed with the Crecy to Poitiers periods in mind.

Great for HYW; OK for WOTR.

Stay away from the most recent Bretonian releases; they are pure fantasy and inferior figure too boot. (And it being GW they cost a lot more than the superior older figures.)

I've got some use out of them by using them for Night Watch.
